Kaiya sat at her desk, her textbooks and notes spread out before her, but her mind was miles away. She was trying to do her homework, but it was nearly impossible to concentrate after what had happened between her and Mikey. Although Kazutora was still in juvie and there was no immediate crisis, she couldn't stop thinking about the inevitable confrontation that loomed in the future. The recent reconciliation between Mikey and Draken, orchestrated by Takemichi, brought her some relief, though the way it happened—by trashing Takemichi's belongings and making fun of him—was far from ideal. At least now, Toman seemed stable, and for that, she was grateful. But the peace felt temporary, a fragile veneer over the deeper issues that remained unresolved.
She also felt a pang of sadness and frustration over her parents. They hadn't called her in years, as if they had completely forgotten about her, as if she had never mattered to them. It was a wound that hadn't healed, a reminder of the abandonment she felt every day.
A soft knock on her door pulled her out of her thoughts. She looked up to see Akira standing there, a mischievous grin on her face.
- "Aren't you the biggest nerd I've ever seen?" Akira teased, leaning against the doorframe. "The Musashi festival will start shortly, come, join me. Or maybe you're going with your boyfriend." She smirked, her tone playful.
- "I'm not going," Kaiya replied, absentmindedly twirling her pen between her fingers. "Emma invited me too, but I'm not in the mood."
- "Did you break up with Keisuke?" Akira asked, a note of concern in her voice, though deep down she couldn't help but feel a flicker of hope. She had always had a crush on Keisuke, after all.
- "Hm? No, nothing like that," Kaiya said, surprised by the idea. The thought of breaking up with Keisuke hadn't even crossed her mind. In fact, she felt closer to him than ever.
- "Then what's bothering you? Come on, you can tell your favorite cousin!" Akira pressed, her tone softening as she moved closer.
Kaiya sighed, her frustration bubbling to the surface.
- "Akira, my family is all messed up... I'm living with you... I'm sorry that I can't be happy and bubbly all the time..." she said, her voice tinged with annoyance.
- "Jeez, Kaiya... I'm sorry... I really am..." Akira said, placing a comforting hand on her shoulder. "Sometimes I forget about your parents..."
Kaiya's gaze softened, and she shook her head.
- "I'm sorry I snapped at you... it's just... it's so strange, isn't it? The only thing we have in common is the same last name," she said, thinking of her parents with a distant, pained look.
Without a word, Akira pulled her into a hug.
- "You know, you have me... and Kazutora will be back. He can live with us when he's back. I'm sure my mom would agree to it. But, Kaiya, you can't stay here all day, drowning in your pain and depression. So get your pretty depressed face out of here and let me show you the beautiful yukata I got for you! Come on, please, come with me to the festival. Mom would never let me go there alone," Akira pleaded, her voice filled with a mixture of concern and determination.
Kaiya hesitated, her mind still swirling with thoughts of Mikey, Kazutora, and the future. But as she looked into Akira's hopeful eyes, she felt a small spark of warmth break through the clouds of her sadness.
- "Okay," Kaiya finally agreed, a faint smile tugging at the corners of her mouth.
They spent the next hour helping each other get ready, a sense of camaraderie and excitement slowly building between them. Kaiya chose a black yukata adorned with delicate white cherry blossoms, the fabric cool and smooth against her skin. Akira, always the more vibrant of the two, opted for a red yukata with pink cherry blossoms, the color bringing out the brightness in her eyes. They took turns doing each other's hair, the room filled with the scent of freshly applied perfume and the soft sound of laughter.
