Hours after the meager dinner, the family's exhaustion finally caught up with them.
Yu Qing, nestled in Anne's lap, yawned and whispered, "I'm sleepy, Mommy."
Anne's gentle voice soothed her, "It's okay, dear. Sleep."
As Yu Qing's eyelids drooped, Anne's own head nodded forward, and she fell asleep sitting up, her back against the wall.
Uncle Stanley, already dozing, slumped beside Catherine and Natalie.
Catherine lay down on the floor, while Natalie sat beside her, leaning against the wall. Soon, Natalie's eyes grew heavy, and she drifted off to sleep, her head lolling to one side.
Raymond pulled his mother, Meng Qi, close, and they settled in for the night, their eyes closing in unison. The sound of gentle snores filled the room, a symphony of exhaustion.
Nathan, the only one awake, sighed heavily. He needed to think, to come up with a solution to get them out of this place.
But as he looked around at his sleeping family, he felt a sense of responsibility wash over him. He had to protect them, keep them safe.
Nathan's mind raced with thoughts of escape, his eyes fixed on the spot where the men had stood, guns in hand.
He wondered to himself, "Were those guns even real? Singapore has strict laws against firearms... What if I just take a chance and attack?"
He scratched his head, weighing the risks. "If I try to fight back, we could all get killed... But there's also a chance we could escape..."
Just as Nathan's thoughts were spiraling, his mother's eyes flickered open.
Catherine's gentle voice cut through the darkness, "It's okay, dear. Sleep. We can think about it later."
Nathan nodded, feeling a mix of relief and frustration. He got up and walked over to the corner where his family lay sleeping.
Uncle Stanley, Catherine, and Natalie were all nestled together, exhausted.
Nathan lay down beside them, his eyes gazing up at the wall. He tried to clear his mind, to calm his racing thoughts. But his brain refused to shut off, still whirling with plans and possibilities.
As he lay there, Nathan felt a sense of determination wash over him. He would find a way to get his family out of this place, no matter what it took. He just had to wait for the right moment.
Soon, his eyelids grew heavy, weighed down by the exhaustion of the day. Despite his racing mind, his body finally succumbed to the fatigue, and he felt himself drifting off to sleep.
His thoughts grew foggy, and his breathing slowed, as he snuggled deeper into the makeshift bed of cold, hard floor. The sound of his family's gentle snores and the faint hum of the fluorescent lights overhead lulled him into a restless slumber.
Nathan's eyes fluttered closed, and he fell asleep beside his loved ones, his dreams no doubt filled with visions of escape and freedom.
The darkness closed in around him, and for a brief moment, the worries of their captivity faded away, replaced by the sweet oblivion of sleep..........
