Nathan, Richard, and Raymond's eyes widened in unison as they turned to face the doorway.
Deborah stood there, her face contorted in anguish, tears streaming down her cheeks as she struggled to break free from Anne's grasp. Behind her, Meng Qi and Yu Qing watched with wide eyes.
Deborah's voice was a desperate cry. "Please! Don't hurt my husband! It was me!"
Nathan's eyes widened in shock. "Mrs. Tan, what are you talking about?"
Deborah's gaze pleaded with Nathan. "I'm the one who's been working with them. I'm the traitor, not Richard."
The room fell silent, with all eyes fixed on Deborah. Nathan's mind reeled as he tried to process this sudden revelation. Why would Deborah, Richard's wife, betray her family? And what did she mean by "working with them"? The questions swirled in Nathan's head as he stared at Deborah, his expression a mix of shock and confusion.
Deborah's tears flowed uncontrollably as she poured out her heart.
"I saw how toxic the family ties between the Lims and Tans had become. Nathan, your controlling and dominating behavior was suffocating, and I feared for Karen's future. I felt I had to take desperate measures to protect my daughter."
She took a deep breath, her voice trembling. "I was the one who wrote the fake letter, to drive a wedge between the families. I knew it was wrong, but I felt trapped and didn't know what else to do."
Nathan's face was a mix of shock, anger, and hurt. "How could you, Mrs. Tan? How could you betray us like this?"
Deborah's eyes pleaded for understanding. "I was trying to protect Karen from being hurt by the family's toxic dynamics. I know I went about it the wrong way, but I was desperate."
Raymond's voice was soft, trying to calm the situation. "Mrs. Tan, why didn't you talk to us about your concerns? We could have worked through this together."
Deborah shook her head, her tears slowing. "I was afraid of being dismissed, of being told I was overreacting. I felt alone and didn't know who to turn to."
Nathan's anger boiled over. "Then what is Mr. Tan doing here?!" he thundered, turning to face Richard.
Deborah cried out, "I told them to take care of my husband! I wanted to protect him too!"
Anne's voice cut in, her words laced with venom. "This doesn't excuse the rest of the family being kidnapped! You're selfish, Deborah! You only thought of yourself and your husband!"
Deborah's face contorted in anguish. "NO! THAT WASN'T PART OF THE PLAN! I DIDN'T KNOW EITHER! I swear, I only wanted to protect Karen and Richard!"
Anne's face was red with rage as she shouted at Deborah, "THANKS TO YOU, YU FANG IS MISSING TOO!"
Deborah's voice rose to a yell as she defended herself, "I DIDN'T KNOW THEY WERE GOING TO DO THIS TO US! I SWEAR! I only wanted to protect Karen and Richard, I didn't know they would take it this far!"
The two women's voices echoed through the room, their anger and fear palpable. Nathan's eyes narrowed, his mind racing with the implications. Raymond tried to step in, but Anne's anger was too intense.
Yu Qing, who had been quietly observing the scene, spoke up, "Mommy, what's going on?"
But the little girl's voice wasn't heard, the two women continued yelling at each other. The situation had just escalated, and it seemed like things would never be the same again.
Meng Qi stepped forward, her eyes flashing with anger. "Enough! Stop yelling at each other! This is getting out of hand."
Anne turned to Meng Qi, her face red with rage. "Mind your own business, Ma! This doesn't concern you."
Meng Qi stood her ground, her voice firm. "Oh, but it does concern me. My sons are involved, and I won't let you tear this family apart."
Deborah's eyes turned to Meng Qi, "Ah ma, please listen to me-"
Meng Qi snorted, her hands on her hips. "Listen to you? You've dragged my family into this mess, Deborah. And now, with Karen and Yu Fang missing... you're going to have to answer to me."
Nathan, Raymond, and Yu Qing stood frozen, watching the exchange between Deborah and Meng Qi with wide eyes.
Yu Qing, only 11 years old, looked like she was about to cry, her eyes darting between her mother, Anne, her grandmother, Meng Qi and her aunt, Deborah.
Nathan's face was set in a grim expression, his eyes fixed on Deborah as if trying to understand her motives.
Raymond's eyes were narrowed, his brow furrowed in concern, as he tried to make sense of the escalating situation. The three of them stood silently, unsure of how to intervene or what to say, as the tension between the women continued to build.
Richard's face was red with worry as he tried to intervene, pulling his wife, Deborah, away from the confrontation.
"Deborah, stop, please," he whispered urgently, trying to calm her down. "You're making things worse."
But it was too late. Meng Qi's eyes narrowed, her voice cold. "You're the one who's been working with them all along, aren't you, Deborah? You're the traitor."
All eyes were on Deborah, her face frozen in a mixture of fear and guilt. The room was silent, the only sound her heavy breathing. She seemed to shrink under the weight of their gazes, her eyes darting between her family members.
"Mrs. Tan, how could you?" Nathan whispered.
Yu Qing's eyes were filled with tears, her face pale. "Mommy, is it true?" she asked, her voice trembling, as she looked at Anne.
Anne's face was etched with anger, her eyes filled with disappointment. "Deborah, why?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
Meng Qi's eyes remained cold, her voice firm. "I want to know everything, Deborah. What did you do, and why?"
Deborah's eyes dropped, her shoulders slumping in defeat.
She took a deep breath, her voice barely above a whisper. "I was just trying to protect my daughter..."
Just as the tension in the room seemed to reach a boiling point, a sudden, loud crack pierced the air... a gunshot......
