Nathan burst out of the room, the sounds of battle cries, shouting, and screaming from his family and the men still echoing in his ears.
He coughed, covering his mouth with his hands as the smoke began to fill the air, making it hard to see. But he didn't hesitate, his eyes fixed on the stairs ahead.
Through the haze, he saw the backs of Karen and Yu Fang, Karen holding Yu Fang's little hands as they ran up the stairs.
Nathan's heart skipped a beat as he hastily followed them, his feet pounding the steps.
The smoke grew thicker, making it harder to breathe, but Nathan pushed on, his determination to reach Karen and Yu Fang driving him forward.
He could hear the sound of their footsteps above him, and he knew he had to keep going.
As he climbed higher, the smoke began to clear, and Nathan saw Karen and Yu Fang reach the top of the stairs. They turned down a long corridor, disappearing from view. Nathan followed, his heart racing with every step.
Where were they going? And what lay ahead? Nathan didn't know, but he was determined to find out. He had to protect Karen and Yu Fang, no matter what dangers lay ahead.
