As they sat beside Karen's bed, the silence was finally broken by Richard's gentle chuckle.

"Ah, Nathan, I remember when your father, Li Hao and I were kids," Richard said, a faraway look in his eyes. "We would explore the streets of Chinatown, trying all sorts of street food and getting into mischief."

Nathan's curiosity was piqued. "What kind of mischief, Uncle Richard?"

Richard's eyes sparkled with nostalgia. "Oh, we would climb trees, play pranks on our friends, and try to catch fish in the Singapore River. Your father was always the adventurous one, pushing me to try new things."

"I can imagine," Nathan said, smiling. "My father always had a sense of wonder about him."

Richard nodded. "Yes, he did. And we remained close friends even as we grew older. We would meet up whenever we could, reminiscing about old times and making new memories."

Nathan listened intently, fascinated by the bond between their fathers. He had never heard these stories before, and it warmed his heart to know that his father and Richard had such a deep friendship.

"That's amazing, Uncle Richard," Nathan said. "I'm glad you have such fond memories of my father."

Richard's expression turned solemn, and he shared a more personal story. "Nathan, Karen is my only daughter. Deborah, my wife, had a miscarriage five years after Karen's birth, and we were unable to have another child."

Nathan's heart went out to Richard, understanding the depth of his love for Karen.

Richard's gaze locked onto Nathan's, his eyes filled with a deep longing. "Promise me, Nathan, that you will take good care of Karen. No more drama between the Lims and Tans. We've been through enough."

"I promise, Uncle Richard, that I will always be there for Karen," Nathan said, his voice filled with conviction.

Richard stood up from his seat, his eyes lingering on Karen's peaceful face. "I'll head back to the condo now," he said, his voice low and gentle.

Nathan nodded, understanding. "Okay, Uncle Richard. Take care."

Richard smiled weakly and nodded. "You too, Nathan. Take care of Karen."

With that, Richard turned and walked out of the hospital ward, leaving Nathan alone beside Karen's bed. The silence was palpable once again, broken only by the soft beeps of the medical equipment and Karen's gentle breathing.

Nathan sat down in the chair Richard had vacated, his eyes fixed on Karen's face. He reached out and took her hand, feeling a sense of responsibility wash over him. He had promised Richard that he would take care of her, and he intended to keep that promise.

As he sat there, Nathan's thoughts turned to the stories Richard had shared about Li Hao and their childhood friendship.

He felt a sense of connection to his father, Li Hao, even though he was no longer alive. And he felt a sense of gratitude towards Richard, for sharing those memories with him.

But most of all, Nathan's thoughts were with Karen, lying unconscious beside him. He willed her to wake up, to come back to him, and he promised her that he would be there for her, no matter what.......
