The morning sun rays, warm and gentle, caressed my face as  stirred the pancake batter, the aroma of cinnamon and maple syrup filling the air. It was the day after we'd moved into his penthouse, a breathtaking space overlooking the city. The thought of sharing this luxurious haven with Aarush, of our lives intertwining in this way, sent a thrill through me. It was a dream come true, having him all to myself, but a nagging worry lingered.

It had all happened so quickly, this move, this life we were building together. But then, a pang of guilt followed. I knew his family had been supportive of his decision to move in here, their smiles genuine, their words kind, but I couldn't shake off the feeling that I was somehow separating him from his family. A part of me, the part that valued family above all else, worried that I was taking away a piece of him, a piece that belonged to them.

The phone bell of mine made me come out of my infinite loop of thoughts, I looked at the screen and it was Chris, a smile formed on my lips.

“Hey, Chris. Good morning!” I greeted, my voice brimming with warmth.

“Good morning, Riti! You sound really happy,” he responded, his tone laced with amusement.

“Of course I’m happy! Marrying the love of my life and starting a joyful new chapter—how could I not be?” I replied, pouring batter into the pan for pancakes.

“I get it now. It makes me happy to hear that you’re doing well, and I must admit, I miss you,” Chris said.

“I miss you too! How about we catch up over dinner tonight? Are you free?” I proposed.

“Yeah, I’m free—”

“Babydoll, who are you talking to?” Aarush suddenly appeared, wrapping his arms around me from behind, his voice still husky from sleep.

“It’s Chris,” I told him.

“Hey there! Good morning,” Aarush said, putting the phone on speaker.

“Good morning, Aarush! I was just saying how much I miss my sister, so I was hoping to see her tonight,” Chris playfully replied.

“Oh, sorry, Chris, but I really don’t think my wife will be able to make it tonight,” Aarush said, narrowing my eyes at him.

“That’s alright then,” Chris replied, sounding a bit disappointed.

“Well, I don’t want to intrude, so I’ll say goodbye. Have a great day, guys.” His voice faded as the call ended.

“Aarush, why did you tell Chris I can’t come for dinner? He misses me, and I was the one who suggested it!” I protested.

“I canceled those plans because you won’t be able to go, Babydoll.” He tightened his grip around my waist and rested his chin on my shoulder.

“But why not? Do you have other plans?” I asked curiously.

“No, I don’t have any plans, but I just know you can't go,” he replied.
