I feel like I am walking through thin ice and it's kind of true sensing my current situation.

My brother's and my husband’s gaze was drilling a hole through my head as I sat across from them. And the atmosphere is silent, a silence before the storm, if I say.

“Riti, do you have anything to say about what you did today?” my brother finally broke the oppressive quiet.

“I just went to get Max Penn, the man from Red Marvel,” I replied, my fingers fidgeting nervously.

“At what cost? Your life?” Aarush's voice rose sharply, making me startle.

“Do you have any idea what could have happened to you if I hadn’t arrived in time, Riti? You have no clue what could have been your fate if I hadn’t shown up when I did!” he erupted. “They would have shot you, beaten you to a pulp—God knows what else!” His voice trembled with fury.

“Aarush—”

“How could you? Vikram, let me say this, your little sister is so selfish. She didn't think about anything else, not about the people who really care about her. Madam, only do what she wants to do.” Aarush shot an angry glance toward my brother. I could tell he was seething.

“Aarush, let me–”

“Not a word, not a fucking word, Riti. Just look at you… what that bastard has done! Your face is marked with fingerprints, undeniable evidence of the violence you endured. That slap was brutal… so brutal it drew blood. If I hadn’t arrived in time, what kind of nightmare would you have been left in? Why can’t you grasp that every time you get hurt, it feels like a part of me is being ripped away? Why are you putting yourself in such peril, deliberately stepping into danger?” He asked, his voice thick with a mix of fury and concern, each word hanging heavily in the air around us.

“I can’t believe you lied to me… you toyed with my trust, made a fool of me all to trap that piece of scum!” His voice rose once more, a tempest of emotions coursing through him. My eyes felt like they were on the verge of overflowing, the tears threatening to spill over, but I fought to hold them back, steeling myself against the rising tide of despair.

“You know,” my brother interjected, stepping forward to join Aarush, his own face etched with concern, “if catching that bastard was your goal, you should have just told me. I would have gone after him for you without hesitation. You know I’d do anything for you, Riti. Anything.” His voice softened, but the intensity of his protective nature was evident.

“I understand… but I didn’t want to be a burden to you when you were finally enjoying some time with your family,” I managed to reply, my voice barely above a whisper, the weight of my actions still pressing down on my heart.

“My family? What do you mean by that, Riti? You’re family too, you know that. You will always come first, even before my wife and child. You hold that position in my life. You’re not merely my sister; to me, you are like a daughter. Don’t you dare ever do something so reckless again. If you need something, anything, just say the word. I’ll be there for you in a heartbeat. Do you understand?” My brother’s tone softened but remained stern, and all I could offer in response was a small, shaky nod, overwhelmed by his unwavering support.
