I was going through some blueprints of Harlin’s teleportation machine when a knock interrupted me. Yes, we have officially started to learn how technology works. It only takes one event to make you change your old ways of living and adapt to the new. But that one event is enough to turn your world upside down.
Although we might not be as good as Harlin is, we are getting somewhere. It was Alerix who suggested learning it since we can't make ourselves trust anyone anymore.
I sigh, annoyed. “ Come in.” These people know that I don't like to be disturbed when I'm working.
“ Eli.” A feminine voice has me looking up from the table.
“ Mother? What are you doing here?” I don't think I called her, or maybe Alerix did and forgot. He has done this before. Mother would come and try to coax Rey out of his room to make him eat something besides alcohol.
“ Ouch. I didn't know I couldn't come without an invitation.” She teases.
“ You know what I mean, mother. Don't make it seem like something else.” I snap. Lack of sleep does that to you. I am not in my right mind today. Sighing, I apologize. “ I'm sorry. I was just….. busy.”
“ I can see that. My boys are destroying their lives away for a dream that is impo….”
“ Stop! Don't! Just don't, mother.” I snap again. Breathing deeper, I run my hands in my hair. I don't like where this conversation is going.
“ Eli, I'm just trying to help. You boys are my sons. It kills me to see you wasting your lives away like that.” I'm glad she is getting straight to the point, but that doesn't mean I appreciate her topic of interest.
“ We are not wasting our time! Look, Mother, I'm not in the mood to have this conversation. I have got a lot of work to do so kindly go to Zed who invited you.”
“ Am I not allowed to make suggestions about my son's life now? Don't I have any right over you guys now?” Here we go. Emotional blackmail. My baby never liked it. She always said it made her feel like she was being manipulated or controlled.
She was right. I'm feeling that exact emotion. So, I ignore my mother and continue to do my work.
“ Eli. Son, I'm your mother. Let me in. Let me help you guys. I went to Alerix, but he threw his door shut on my face before I could utter a single word.” He was smart. “ And Rey, he is not conscious enough to know the difference between reality and illusion. Son, Zed, and I are worried. This isn't healthy. You guys need help.”
I wonder what Zed suggested this time. Last time, he sent a healer, which, by the way, was beaten badly by Rey. Before that, he suggested increasing our stay in the dungeons, and before that, he sent some tickets for wh*re house.
“ Fine. If you aren't going to talk, then I will have to take reins in my own hands. Don't say later that I didn't warn you.”
“ You're doing exactly what Father did.” I mutter when she turns to leave the room. Disappointed with her and life, I lean against the table and shake my head in irritation. “ I can't believe you, mother.”
She looks embarrassed but soon composes herself. “ I'm doing this for you. You cannot….”
I scoff. “ Doing this for us? That sounds like a typical parent ordering their child to do what they want without wanting to know what the child wants. And what do you exactly know about us, mother? No offense, but you ran away with your boyfriend, leaving your sons with that emotionally absent b*stard. So, I'm sorry if it hurts you, but you can't come here now and give us lectures on what is right and wrong.”
