A week left before the big Pokemon Contest in Slateport City. Trainers from all over are filled with anticipation as they perfect their techniques and make their final preparations. As the trainers prep and practice for the contest, Mew and the others watch.
"This is so exciting!" Max says.
"This last week really flew by," Brock says.
"Pika Pika," (I'll say they did.) Pikachu says.
"Next week today is the big day," Tomo says. Then turns to the girls, "May and Mew, you ready?"
May winks, "You bet we are! And there's one person in particular I can't wait to battle against."
May has a flashback to what happened just a week prior.
"Yeah!" May happily says.
May then turns to Brock, "Brock, take care of Torchic for me?"
"Uh..." Brock replies, unsure.
"Thanks," May says with a smile.
She then turns to Beautifly, "Come on, Beautifly. Boy, have we got work to do!"
May runs ahead with Beautifly behind her, leaving behind a sad Torchic.
"Torchic, just play with the others for a while!" May says.
And in no time, May has left to do some Contest training. As May and Beautifly leave, Max looks down at Torchic, concerned.
Soon, everyone is busy having lunch at the Pokemon Center. But Max isn't eating anything.
"Max, what's wrong?" Molly asks.
"Are you not hungry?" Jen asks.
"It's just that... It's not fair what May did to Torchic!" Max says, sounding upset.
"There's nothing wrong with Torchic, is there?" Tomo asks.
"I mean, well, May just spends all of her time with Beautifly now. And then she goes off and leaves Torchic alone just to practice with them. So I'm wondering whether or not May even likes Torchic anymore," Max says, upset.
But Mew says, "Of course she likes Torchic. Right, Brock?"
Brock: Yeah. I think May really loves Torchic," Brock says.
"How do you know?" Max asks, "You both seem so sure about it. After all, May has been super busy this past week, after everything that's been going on."
"I'll tell you why, it's because Torchic was May's very first Pokémon," Mew says.
"So? Why does that matter?" Max asks.
"Well, Torchic's the first one who really became sort of a partner to May," Brock says.
"I still don't see why that makes it so much more special," Max asks.
"Yeah, maybe this all sounds a bit weird to you cause you're still known for being a trainer," Mew says.
"Take your Zigzagoon for example. It's the very first Pokemon you got, right?" Brock asks.
"Um yes, I remember. It was the best day of my life," Max says, and turns to Zigzagoon, "Right Zigzagoon?"
Zigzagoon, who is eating, answers, "Zigzagoon!" (Sure is!) and nods.
"Yep. Your first Pokémon partner will always be special to you," Brock says.
Then Mew turns to her Pokemon, "And, of course, all of the Pokémon I catch are really special to me. But, I'm sure they already know that."
