Hazel hated Halloween.

She just couldn't get it. People dressing up as monsters? They weren't afraid to get burned alive?
But Piper and Annabeth loved it. And they were determined to get her to love it too.

'Hazel, it's gonna be fine. It's a tradition.' Piper explained, bouncing up and down next to her in the bed.
'Yea! I already have so many ideas for cool costumes!' Annabeth insisted.
'I don't know, guys. I think I'll pass.' Hazel sighed. 'But I'm sure I'll have a lot of fun too.'
'But you can't miss out on trick or treating!' Piper exclaimed. 'That would be horrible!'
'I can buy candy for myself.'
'That's not why we do it! It's for the thrill, the adventure!'
'And it's a lot cheaper than buying it. Roughly-.'
'You'll love it!' The Cherokee girl interrupted. 'Just try it, please?'
'No, it's fine, really. You two can go.' She objected.

Her friends stayed silent, contemplating. Hazel looked up, and the expression of the two girl had become serious.
'Haze.' Annabeth began. 'Is there more to this?'
'Yea.' Piper agreed. 'You never act so stubborn.'
She took a deep breath. 'No, nothing.'
'Is it something from your past?' Annabeth asked. Hazels jaw clenched, and she stood up.
'It's nothing I said!' She lashed out. 'Just... let it rest!'

Her friends looked shocked, and she felt a sting of guilt. 'I'm sorry.' She started, cursing the tears that filled her eyes. 'I have a really bad experience with Halloween.'
Annabeth stood up and pulled her into a hug, while Piper rubbed her back. She found herself absolutely breaking down.
'What happened?' The daughter of Athena whispered in her ear. She tried to speak through violent sobs.

'T-they thought I was a witch.' She whimpered. 'A-and they tried... they...'
Tears rolled down her face. She didn't want to talk about her past life, the one she tried to supress so bad.

'Oh gods... Hazel, no one should have to go through that.' Piper reassured her. 'But times has changed, and we're here for you.'
'Exactly.' Annabeth agreed. 'We'll make sure it never happens again. It's fine if you don't want to go trick or treating.'
Piper nodded. Hazel shook her head.

'No, I don't want to be controlled by the past. I want to try it.'
'We're here for you, okay?' Piper comforted, as they pulled her into a group hug.

And Hazel remembered she had amazing friends.
