Chapter 29

Mitchell comes into the room from the back and sees her. Him and Helen both stop, "Is that ..." Helen stops as Mitchell leaves her and stamps over ready to confront Amelia. Then stops when the kids start to talk.

"Grandpa I brought you a present." Olivia says.

"Me too I made this for you." Conny passes it to him.

"Grandpa the girls are being silly. They forgot to say Happy Birthday. Here this is for you."

"Let me see them." He unrolls each one and compliments them. "These are so pretty I will have to hang them up on the wall."

"I have this for you." Amelia hands him a gift.

"You didn't have to." She keeps looking at Mitchell who is standing there glaring at her. When Max opens the gift, it is a painting of him and his wife and the grandkids. "Amelia this is exquisite. You are such a talented artist. This picture means the world to me."

"I thought you would like a picture of what we all want." Linda and Sue, seeing how angry Mitchell is, gather around Amelia to protect her.

Michael cuts Mitchell off and stands in front of Amelia. "Ames, it has been a long time. How is my favorite sister-in-law?"

"Michael nice to see you again. But I am not your sister- in- law."

He gives her a hug. "No, you are better, you are my sister. Are these my nieces and nephew?"

The kids look up at their mom. She nods to let them know he is their uncle. "I am Olivia, and this is Conny."

"I will tell him my name. I am Evan." He puts his hand out to shake Michaels.

"It is nice to meet you I am your Uncle Michael. You guys are very pretty, and I am glad to meet you." He then tickles the girls. When he goes to tickle Evan, he gives him a glare that stops him right away.

"You are a little touchy aren't you. You are not to tickle me and don't do that to my sisters again. You are my uncle, but we don't know you and you are not allowed to touch us."

"Sorry Michael he is our little protecter. He is the man of the house." Amelia explains.

"I think he is adorable." Michael then ruffles his hair.

"Mummy can we have some cake and ice cream we have been here so long, and you didn't get us any."

Olivia you and that sweet tooth will get you in trouble one day."

"We want some too mummy, I am hungry." Conny says as she tugs on her mom's skirt.

Linda takes Conny's hand. "I'll take her over to get some cake. Sue, you get Olivia, Michael why don't you take Evan."

"I got him." He then looks at Mitchell then at Amelia. He gives his brother a warning look. "Mitchell." Then he walks off with the kids, after a few steps he turns to Ames and his dad. "Dad if you need me call me."

"We're fine." He turns to Mitchell and knows he has to say something, but he didn't know what. "Son If you want answers you need to calm down and walk outside to talk in private."

Mitchell is losing all his patience and wants to drag her home with the kids. "Where have you been? What gave you the right to take off and take my child with you?" Mitchell is not yelling but is loud enough that anyone in the room could hear him.

Amelia straightens up standing as tall as she can. "I am not discussing this here and messing up your father's party. If you want to talk to me, you can come to my house tomorrow and we will talk. I mean talk, you start yelling or name calling, and you will leave. Do you understand me?"

"You think you can give me orders. Do you propose to make me listen to you. The one that ran away from her husband and abandoned him. Who did you run off with?" He realizes it was a mistake saying that. He let his anger take control, but he can't take the words back. "You don't deserve my patients and you are not going to get them."

"That's it I am leaving and don't bother coming over and talking. We have nothing to say to each other." Amelia starts to walk over to get her kids who were coming to protect her from their father.

Mitchell grabs her arm. "You are not walking off on me. You are going to stand right here and answer my questions." He is squeezing her arm so tight it is leaving red marks on it.

"You have thirty seconds to take your hand off me or else."

"Or else what? You really think you have the right to threaten me. You the runner and thief, you stole my children."

"Or else this." She takes his hand at the wrist and sinks her thumb into it and twists it at the same time. The pressure makes him lose his grip. "I am not the little girl you called names and treated like shit. Touch me again and I promise you will regret it."

The three kids run to their mother "You leave our mummy alone. Or we will beat you up and we can do it." Amelia takes her kids and tucks them behind her.

He looks at the kids as he rubs his wrist. "They are mine, aren't they?"

"You hurt our mummy and we don't want you for our da." Evan tells him with his arms crossed over his chest. The same stance his sisters are taking.

Mitchell looks at them one more time then leaves the party. Max looks at the direction his son just left. "That was worse than I expected."

"That is why I left. I should never have come back. I think it is time for us to go home, and I don't mean next door."

Max gives her a hug. "Give him time he will come around. I will talk to him."

"You think he is going to talk to you after this." Max realizes this was not going to be as easy as he thought. What Amelia said is most likely the truth.

He takes a deep breath, to calm down. "He will forgive me and understand why I did it."

"Why did you do it?" Amelia asks.

"I love you like you are my own and I didn't want you out there by yourself with my grandkids. I also knew if he found you and you were not ready you would have run again."

"Even with your good intentions it doesn't mean he won't feel hurt and devastated. I know I would. Kids let's go home." The three kids took her hands and left not liking their mother's tears.
