Chapter 44
Later that morning a knock was heard at the door. The kids got up; the knocking woke them. When they figured it was the door they went to answer it. "Oh, it is you." Evan said when he saw it was Mitchell.
"I came to take you horseback riding."
"It is too early you woke us up." Conny complained.
"We are young and need our sleep to get big." Olivia informs him.
"You can't come in our mummy isn't up yet. Come back in two hours."
"Why is your mother sleeping while you are awake?"
"We wouldn't be awake if you didn't bang on the door." Conny huffs.
"If I leave, will she get up with you? I don't want you alone in the house."
"We are not alone mum is here. You just want to be a pain. Aunt Linda is right you are a pain in the tail end."
"Evan remember what mum said. You can't be mean. Even if someone is a pain in the tail end."
Mitchell is hiding his amusement at the kids, even though he was called a pain in the tail end. "Why don't I come in and make you some breakfast and let your mommy sleep."
"Do you know how to cook?"
"Not too good, but I can make scrambled eggs. You want to give them a try Conny?"
"No, we will get the frozen waffles mum has in the freezer."
Mitchell doesn't understand what Conny is talking about. Evan sees his face and shakes his head. "Mummy makes extra waffles for us on the weekends so we can microwave them if we get up late for school."
"I see. Well let me help you get them, and we can sit and talk until your mother gets up." The kids get the plates and the syrup along with fruit that is cut up in the refrigerator. Once the waffles are heated up, they all sit and enjoy breakfast. "You guys know your way around the kitchen."
"Mum told us we are too smart not to learn how to take care of ourselves, so she taught us. Her and Sadie."
"Sadie, who is she?"
"She is our nana who loves us. We talk to her almost every day we miss her very much." Mitchell sees Conny is upset and doesn't know what to do to make her feel better.
Evan hates to see his sisters cry. "It's okay mum said we can go visit her soon. If you cry it won't help." Olivia hugs her sister to make her feel better.
"Can you guys tell me where home is?"
Just as Mitchell asked the question Amelia came out of her room. "You raided the waffles. Why didn't you wake me it is omelet Sunday."
"I got up to go to the loo and I saw you painting. It was late, we wanted to sleep in too."
Conny cut Evan off. "Until he banged on the door and woke us. He said let you sleep he would watch us."
"Thank you for letting me sleep but you are not to open the door without an adult. I don't want you letting in any bad people."
"Okay mum we won't does it again."
She gives each one a kiss on their head. "Now go get cleaned up if you want to ride a horse."
"You look like shit why don't you go back to bed it is still early. We can go in an hour or two. I will watch them."
"I haven't gotten a lot of sleep sense they have been born. It is just another day. Nothing some coffee won't fix."
"You want a cup?"
"Sure, thanks."
Mitchell watches and wonders what it would be like to be with her and the kids. "Still one sugar and cream?"
"You remembered." Mitchell was surprised.
"I made you coffee for so many years how could I forget. Every morning you watched me I had to make you coffee, or you were a grumpy bear."
"I didn't think about that. You were such a good kid, you didn't need me to watch you, you always did what you were told."
"Here's your coffee, let me get this mess up then I will get ready, and we can go."
By the time the table was cleared and wiped down the kids came down the steps. "We are ready to go."
"Let me take a shower and get dressed you guys talk to your da."
They sat and looked at each other for a good while until Olivia spoke up. "You wanted to hear us play. Does you want to hear us now?"
"I would like that very much."
"Follow us." They went to the den that has the piano and the other musical instruments they played. "Sit there and we will play for you." They each played the same song together.
Mitchell was so impressed with what these three could do. "You guys play so beautifully. Thank you for letting me hear it. "Who taught you how to play?"
"Mum taught us."
"Your mother plays music?" He was surprised to hear that.
"Yep, she can play a lot of stuff. She can sing very pretty too."
"I remember she sang all the time. Even as a child she liked to sing. Tell me what else can you guys do?"
"We can paint like mum, she taught us. Just like she taught us to play all the instruments." Conny tells him.
"Do you want to show me some of your paintings?" He wants them to open up to him and accept him as their father. He also wants to know how and where they lived.
"We'd have to go to the painting room." Olivia is not sure if they should take him in there. "Mum might not like that."
"I don't think she would mind. I used to watch your mother paint all the time when she was younger."
Both girls looked at Evan for an answer. "She said to give him a chance. We can show him. Wait you knew mum when she was young like us?"
"I have known your mom from the time she was a newborn baby."
"Poor mum, she had to put up with you her whole life." This time Mitchell laughs at what Olivia said. "Come on." The three take him to her art room. "This is my easel and that one is Conny's."
Where is yours Evan?"
"I don't paint. I like computers I have a desk and laptop over here."
"I see, so are these your paintings girls." They nod yes. "I can see you paint very well for being four."
"You want to see mummy's painting?"
"If you want to show me. I would like that."
They uncover her paintings that are not done yet. Then they uncover the one she did last night. "See how pretty they are."
"Your mother is a wonderful artist. Her pictures should be in an art gallery."
"Uncle Collin wants mum to sell the paintings of us, but mum won't sell them. She tells him they are her love and passion, and he can't have them."
"Who is Uncle Collin? Is he mommy's boyfriend?"
"Mummy doesn't have a boyfriend she works too much to have time for them. She told us that she only has time for us."
"Okay, if he isn't her boyfriend Conny who is Collin?"
"Mum works for him sometimes."
"No, she don't Conny, he works for mummy." Olivia tells him.
"Okay don't worry about it. It isn't important. Why don't we see if your mother is ready to go." Just as they got to the living room Amelia came down the steps. "Ready to go?"
