Koi

My chest gets tight, like it's in a giant's fist. I look over at her.

Why isn't she as worried as me?

The gong rings a second time.

I look up at who I'm supposed to fight.

Trunks is his name. He's from House of Tea.

He charges for me. I instantly trip over my feet. Visions of blood on my uniform flash in and out.

Oh my-

"Ah!" I push my self backwards, crab walking.

He's too big. I can't. I know... I know I can't.

The gong sounds.

I'm out of bounds.

"Mm mm, get up Koi!" Pa shouts.

"Jet," Ma calms him.

He snaps his head towards her. He speaks softly to her, but I can still hear what he's saying. I'm sure everyone else can too.

"You know what this is. You know what this will mean in the future," he says quietly to her; he's clearly upset.

He's never easily angered... ever; they don't usually fight. I- they must know what I know. They have to. They always know.

Everyone's silent. They whisper to each other.

"Calm down Jet," she tries.

"Calm down? I already don't wanna see this-" he stops and looks at me.

"This isn't his first fight," Ma says.

"Of course it ain't Chi, but him cowering will just make it worse," I barely hear him.

It makes me upset.

Something in me... wishes I was wrong about.

"Make what worse? See what? See me lose the worst I've ever lost?" I stand, growing more and more angry.

My mom grabs my dad's hand.

"We both just love you a lot," my mom says.

I untie my belt and throw it on the floor. I try to walk off, but my parents stop me. Ma puts her hand on my head and pushes my forehead back so I'm looking right in her eyes.

It doesn't hurt, but I instantly regret what I just did. She points at me with her other hand while still holding my head back.

"Hey, young man? You crazy? Don't disrespect the dojo," she says.

"... you remember what me and your mother said? You can always ask me, your mother, or Grandmaster for a break; we won't always say yes, but you are allowed to rest, heal, and recover. You're allowed to prioritize your mental health, but if you quit, you're quitting on yourself and your destiny. We told you this. Yes, you were chosen, but you must choose. We keep things from you, but we didn't lie about this. If you quit, you're quitting on everyone that's apart of your destiny and yourself," he grabs my hands, then pulls me into a hug.
