The Irony of Choking on a Lifesaver

It's funny, isn't it, how life tends to go?
The things meant to save us are the ones that lay us low.
A small candy in hand, meant to sweeten the day,
But here I am gasping as it takes breath away.

A "lifesaver" in name, round and hollow with care,
Yet now it betrays me, with lungs gasping for air.
How strange that a symbol of rescue and aid
Could suddenly turn to the fear that it made.

Isn't it like love, when it starts out so sweet,
Only to trip us, sweep us off our feet?
The thing we hold onto, thinking it's safe,
Can slip through our fingers, a bitter aftertaste.

The irony stings like the loss of control,
When what we hold closest begins to take toll.
A savior becomes the source of our fight,
Like shadows emerging from comfort and light.

But maybe in choking, there's a lesson to learn—
Not every safe harbor is where we should turn.
Sometimes the things that are meant to protect
Can twist into something we didn't expect.

So here's to the lifesavers, the loves, and the fears,
The sweet contradictions that echo through years.
For even in struggle, in breathless surprise,
We find in the choking, new strength to arise.
