At the Store: The Build-Up
It was a regular shopping day, and MJ had taken all four Stark kids to the store. Eric and Ariel were sitting in the shopping basket, looking around curiously at all the colorful shelves. Charlie and Charlotte were walking alongside the cart, although Charlotte was clearly getting restless.
As they passed the toy aisle, Charlotte spotted a new action figure she desperately wanted.
Charlotte: “Mom! Can I get this toy? Pleeeeease?”
MJ glanced over and shook her head. “Not today, Charlotte. We’re not here to buy toys.”
Charlotte’s face immediately darkened. “But it’s the one I’ve been waiting for! Why can’t I get it?”
MJ: “Because I said no. We’re here to get groceries, not toys.”
Making a Scene
Annoyed by MJ’s refusal, Charlotte’s frustration boiled over. Her voice grew louder.
Charlotte: “This is so unfair! You never let me get anything I want!”
Charlie, sensing that things were about to escalate, stepped back. “Uh-oh. Here we go…”
Charlotte’s complaints only grew louder, drawing attention from other shoppers.
Charlotte: “I hate shopping with you! You’re always so mean!”
MJ kept her calm but was clearly trying to avoid making a scene. “Charlotte, lower your voice. We’re in a public place. I said no, and that’s final.”
Charlotte: “I don’t care! You’re the worst!”
MJ sighed and pushed the cart toward the checkout line, ignoring the outburst.
Eric whispered to Ariel from the basket. “She’s really mad.”
Ariel nodded, wide-eyed. “Yeah, super mad.”
In the Car: The Fit Continues
Once they were all in the car, Charlotte’s fit didn’t stop. In fact, it escalated. As MJ started driving home, Charlotte began screaming and crying uncontrollably, kicking the back of the seat.
Charlotte: “This is so unfair! You’re ruining everything!”
Charlie, sitting beside her, tried to calm her down. “Charlotte, stop it. You’re just gonna get in more trouble.”
But Charlotte wasn’t listening. “I don’t care! I don’t care about anything!”
MJ, gripping the steering wheel tightly, sighed again. “Charlotte, enough. You’re acting out, and this isn’t going to end well for you.”
Charlotte, still kicking and yelling: “I don’t care! I’m not going home!”
Eric, covering his ears, leaned over to Ariel. “She’s really loud…”
Ariel nodded. “Yeah. I think she’s gonna be in big trouble when we get home.”
Arriving Home: Peter Steps In
When they finally pulled into the driveway, Charlotte was still in the middle of her meltdown. MJ sent a quick text to Peter, who was inside working on some projects. He came out to meet them at the car, seeing Charlotte’s red, tear-streaked face and MJ’s exasperated expression.
Peter: “What’s going on?”
MJ: “She’s been throwing a fit ever since I told her she couldn’t get a toy at the store.”
Peter crouched down to Charlotte’s level, speaking softly but firmly. “Charlotte, you need to calm down. Take a deep breath.”
Charlotte, still sobbing: “I don’t want to! Everything’s stupid!”
Peter’s tone remained calm. “Charlotte, we’re not going inside until you calm down.”
Charlotte, still upset but seeing her dad’s serious face, slowed her sobbing a bit. “But it’s not fair…”
Peter: “I know you’re upset, but throwing a fit isn’t the way to handle it. You need to apologize to your mom for yelling at her in the store.”
Charlotte wiped her eyes but stayed quiet, still angry.
Peter: “Charlotte?”
Charlotte, mumbling: “Sorry, Mom…”
MJ nodded. “Thank you, Charlotte. But we’ll still need to talk about your behavior when we get inside.”
The Consequences
Once they all got inside, Peter guided Charlotte to her room.
Peter: “Listen, Charlotte. I get that you were frustrated, but screaming, kicking, and yelling at your mom isn’t okay. You’re grounded for the rest of the week.”
Charlotte, looking down: “But I was just mad…”
Peter: “I know you were, but that doesn’t make it okay to act like that. You need to learn how to handle your anger better.”
Charlotte sighed but didn’t argue further. She knew that once her dad made up his mind, there was no changing it.
Aftermath
As Charlotte sat in her room, grounded and without her toys or devices, she thought about how things had spiraled out of control. Down the hall, she could hear Ariel and Eric playing, and Charlie’s voice drifting in from his room. She knew that for the next few days, she’d be missing out on all the fun.
Maybe next time, she’d think twice before throwing a fit in the store.
