Anakin lumbered slowly through the doors of the quarters he shared with his wife, utterly exhausted from his mission. His shoulders sagged under the weight of the men who died at the hands of the Zillow Beast, adding to the already significant toll resting there.
"Anakin!"
At Cassandra's excited cry, he raised his head.
Cassandra beamed at him over the top of the book clutched in her hands. "Sorry, I didn't meet you at the base, but I'm not exactly feeling up to it." She wore an over-sized sweater and had a blanket draped over her lap. His medallion hung over her chest, the bronze disk glinting softly.
Attire she reserved for her monthly cycle. Anakin wasn't the only one having a rough day.
He smiled tiredly. "It's good to be home."
Shafts of light from the late afternoon sun poured through the windows, casting an almost angelic corona around Cassandra. On the far side of the sofa Porggy snoozed away, a stuffed toy clutched protectively in his wings.
Even as the galaxy fell apart it was a comfort for Anakin that some things remained the same.
A concerned line formed between Cassandra's brows. She set aside her book and opened her arms to him. "Come here, sweetie."
Meeting her shining gaze, some of the weight lifted away from Anakin's shoulders.
Bracing a hand on the armrest, Anakin leaned down to kiss her. Her lips were soft and yielding beneath his own. He smiled against her mouth as she arched into him, clutching his forearm possessively. She tasted like sweet honey on a warm summer day.
Cassandra gasped softly in protest when he pulled back. Anakin cupped her face in his palms. "On your cycle again, huh?"
She grimaced. "Sadly, yes."
Anakin sank onto the cushion beside Cassandra and curled an arm around her shoulders. Her soothing compassion washed over him like a heady balm through the Force. Sweet, gentle, bathing his battered soul in warmth. He stroked her arm comfortingly. "Anything I can get you? Tea? Heating pad?"
Cassandra shook her head.
On the end-table Anakin spied crumpled wrappers that looked suspiciously like they were from chocolate bars. Cassandra had raided Master Yoda's personal chocolate supply again it seemed.
He didn't say anything, using a pulse of Force power to push the wrappers into the garbage bin.
"Threepio made tea and fetched the heating pad." She rubbed her stomach gingerly. "Sometimes it sucks being a woman."
"I can fetch a pain suppressant if you need one." He offered, sliding his hand down her back to rest at the base of her spine.
"Took one a few minutes ago." Cassandra angled toward Anakin, her knee bumping against his'. "We haven't spoken since the Chancellor's meeting. How are things on Malastare?"
