Something bashed Anakin over the head waking him. He jolted upright, the sheets tangling around his waist. He summoned his lightsaber from the nightstand, igniting it.

Anakin looked around wildly for the threat, a painful knot throbbing on top of his head. His vision sharpened, adjusting to the shadows. Cassandra's staff hovered in the air in front of him, the raw crystal embedded in the top of the staff glowing brightly. "What the kriff?"

Brushing his hair out of his face, Anakin glanced over at the other side of the mattress. It was empty. The pillow lay on the floor as if Cassandra had crawled out of bed in a hurry.

Anakin was a light sleeper. How had she left the bedroom without him noticing? Kicking off the covers, he climbed out of bed to locate his missing wife.

The floorboards were warm against his bare feet from the low-burning fire in the hearth. He crept across the bedroom and peered into the refresher. The automatic lights flickered on, illuminating the unoccupied room.

The staff floated toward the bedroom doorway, waiting. Dread knotted his stomach. Something was wrong.

This is the second time Anakin witnessed independent action by the sorceress' staff. Usually it lay dormant, about as useful as a plank of wood. He followed the relic through the cabin sure it was leading him to Cassandra.

Anakin's senses told him she was still in the vicinity which reduced some of his anxiety. Cassandra's mind was clouded, distant. Her emotions were a dull pulse in the Force, barely tangible from the other life forms of the planet.

The staff tipped to the side, pointing toward the backyard like an arrow. Confused, Anakin peered through the window over the kitchen sink.

Silver moonlight glinted from behind a thick layer of clouds, highlighting a small figure standing in the yard.

Cassandra.

Mission accomplished, the staff fell with a clatter, crystal going dim. Anakin barreled through the side door across the snow to reach his wife.

Cassandra wore only a thin nightgown, the soft white folds pooling around her bare feet. Head bowed; her hair concealed her face from view.
