So eventually, the group of five made their way over to the hotel.
The boys made Maddy wait outside for a while, but called her in for a surprise.
Jackson had his hand over her eyes as he lead her in and say her down at the table, only letting her see when everything was finally ready.
"This was supposed to be executed a lot better. It was planned by Daisy and Bels." Enzo said.
She finally looked at the table in front of her to see a pink, heart shaped cake on the table, surrounded by a few presents, a stack of birthday cards, and Rhys and Enzo's phones, that were on FaceTime with Daisy and Bella.
"Happy birthday!" Everyone yelled, Daisy and Bella's being a bit delayed.
"Oh my god, this is amazing." Maddy laughed, she was slightly in shock. Not only that her friends had planned this for her, but also the fact that the greatly small minds of her four friends were able to actually carry it out so well.
"Another surprise," Enzo started, handing her a knife to cut the cake. "It's like a massive mini roll. Dais had it made by some fancy expensive New York baker. We just had to pick it up."
"This is too much, you guys shouldn't have."
"I told you!" Rhys laughed. "Too much. We should've just gone with a bottle of Prosecco and some normal mini rolls."
"Shut it." Ethan said with a chuckle, and then realised that they forgot to light the candles. "Anyone got a light?"
All four of them reached into their pockets, and soon enough the candles were lit and Madeline sat awkwardly whilst her friends sang (horribly) happy birthday to her.
"Before you cut the cake!" Jackson yelled, snatching the knife. "Something that you should light first." He smirked, handing her a joint.
They passed it around whilst Maddy opened her presents.
She got a 200 pack of Marlboro lights from Lorenzo, new sony headphones from Jackson, to replace the ones he broke during the first week of summer, a limited edition Lana Del Rey born to die flask from Bella, a collection of hello kitty teddies from Enzo, a red Ferrari racer jacket from Daisy, and the black platform sock boots that she'd wanted since she was sixteen, from Ethan.
They were done with the blunt, but there were still boxes left to open. One from Daisy and Ethan's parents, which turned out to be hello kitty socks, and a box wrapped in gold shiny paper, with a huge bow on it, and a gift tag that read '-from mum'.
"Okay, who was trying to be funny?" Maddy groaned, forcing a laugh.
"Your mum gave that to Ethan's mum when she was in hospital, asked her to make sure you get it on to ur eighteenth." Lorenzo mumbled, barely coherent, but Maddy was used to it enough to understand.
"Really?" She whispered, looking back at the box. She picked it up and sat down on a bad, away from the rest of the group.
Inside it was a letter, that Madeline saved to read when she was sober, a framed photo of the two of them from when Maddy was only five, her mother's only expensive perfume. She never wore it, but Maddy always wanted it. There was also a cheque with a post-it on it that read 'for a concert. Even if I can't be there like I used to.'
Madeline took a moment to look at what she'd already taken out of the box. It was none half empty, but thinking about her late mother was too much for her. She didn't want to spend the rest of the day sobbing in Ethan or Lorenzo's arms so she put everything back, and decided to save it until later.
