Cerelia stayed by Evie's headstone for an hour even after the pastor was finished with the service.
She placed the bouquet in front of it, smoothing out the wrinkles from its outer packaging. "Your favourite lilies."
She smiled down at it solemnly unsure of how to stop the tears from falling.
"I am so sorry, my little Evie." She whispered, her eyes downcast in shame. "I failed to protect you from the atrocities of this world. I promised you I would never let anything happen to you and yet. . ."
Cerelia broke down crying before she could manage to complete her sentence. Hugging herself, she felt so alone and cold. Evie's absence was haunting her and was a reminder of how she has failed her little sister, and how she has failed the promise she had made to herself to never let anything happen to Evie.
Life was cruel. She had seen this fact in action throughout the hundreds of years she has gone through. It is brutal, unforgiving and just not fair. But always to her. Never for her sister, because she'd made sure that Evie could have all the happiness that she couldn't. But today, here she stood, helpless as life destroyed her sister's dreams and ambitions and snatched the pure soul away from Cerelia.
She tried to calm down her crying when she felt the presence of someone behind her, but all efforts were useless. Stopping herself from crying felt like an impossible task at that moment.
Lucien sat down beside her in front of Evie's grave and placed a set of fresh flowers in front of it. Such a small gesture and Cerelia felt like crying up even more. She turned her teary gaze to Lucien, feeling her shoulders shake with her silent cries.
He wordlessly wrapped his arms around her shoulders, stroking her hair to comfort her. Neither of them said anything for a long time. He allowed her to cry her heart out, holding him close for emotional support. He knew this was absolutely devastating for her. Evie was her everything. She had loved her, raised her more like a mother, than a sister. Evie had been the anchor that had helped her get out of the darkness of the events of Plymouth. And today that anchor was gone. And probably because of his fault. Cerelia kept telling him over and over that she can't have Evie in the middle of the warzone. She can't lose her. And yet here they were. He had done the exact thing Cerelia was afraid of happening. He will make Klaus pay for his actions. But right now, he needed to make sure that Cerelia stayed safe too.
So he may sound like a manipulative bitch, but this needs to be done.
"Cerelia." He said softly, pulling back to look at her when her crying had significantly lessened. "Hey, look at me."
