It's strange looking upon these halls. You'd think one would get bored of seeing the same exact scenery for the thousandth time, but it still had the same effect as the first time she laid her eyes on it. It was stunning, an architectural masterpiece that was fit for a god. Well, it felt like she was in the presence of one at the very least. Maybe it was the weak sunlight refracting through those mosaic windows, or maybe it was the nature-esque ambiance despite the lack of any flora and fauna.
Or maybe it was because that goddamned skeleton stood in the middle of it, slowly inhaling in and out, his breath barely noticeable. His body was bathed in light, one side slightly more illuminated than the other, casting a dark shadow across the other side of his skull. He stood there pretending to be nonchalant with his hands stuck in the pockets of his blue sweater. However, his body language said otherwise. Those pinpoint eyes of his were trained on her, studying her, waiting for her to make a move. There was a sense of foreboding in his posture like he knew something was different this time. His spine was bent slightly more than last time, his eyes drooped a little too low. Even that infamous smile of his felt weak yet forced all the same.
Seeing as the Human made no attempt at his life, he took his opportunity to speak.
"I don't know how much longer I can keep counting kiddo. It feels like neither of us is making any progress. You genocide as much of the underground as you can, I kill you here, and you come back to do it all over again. It's so... tiring," Sans' eyes flit away for a moment before settling on her again.
"I know you've made it your mission to eradicate the entirety of the underground. You've probably done that a very long time ago after someone, a monster probably, wronged you in some way. I know it must have been scary. I know it must have hurt. I know that they shouldn't have treated you that way, and I'm sorry that you had to face that. But this... what you're doing isn't right. It isn't fair for the rest of the underground to suffer for one person's actions."
"......" The Human only stared at the skeleton as he spoke.
"There has to be another way... one that doesn't involve a sea of dust, one that doesn't result in... this," Sans continued, splashing out his arms to emphasize his point.
"Please... I don't want to fight anymore. I'm tired of watching the underground vanish. I'm tired of struggling for the same exact reason. I'm tired of killing you. I'm tired of seeing our numbers go up every single time you decide to try again. I'm tired... so, so tired. The only thing I can hope for is that there is still a shred of humanity left in you, that maybe, just maybe, someone else is listening, someone who isn't just ruthless and violent, someone else that I used to call a friend. Someone that can put an end to these countless deaths and suffering."
"......" No response. A twinge of sadness falls upon Sans' face as he realizes this whole thing is pointless.
"You're... not listening are you?" Sans asked, a shadow crossing over his face.
Sans lets out a disappointed sigh, his smile faltering for a moment before weakly pulling itself up again.
"Okay then... I guess that no matter what, you and I are both destined to burn here. I know not our sins and how hefty they were to warrant this eternal stay in the deepest pits of hell."
The world fades to black... for what feels like the final time.
The Human rushed forward, instantly crossing the dark room in a blink of an eye, crimson dagger in hand.A slash upwards and Sans is gone, space begins to tear around the Human. Slight reverberations in the air signified where he was going to reappear. The Human twists around, flipping the blade in her hand to preemptively attack.
