❝People who are dealing with depression or addiction or suicidal thoughts or mental illness . . . they're strong. You're strong because you've been in this fight and you wake up thinking you're going to beat it again today.❞- Jared Padalecki
Today is July 19th, and today is the day that Jared Padalecki was born. A man that helped start conversations around the world, made them smile, made them laugh, and made them believe in themselves.
So yeah, Jared is an actor who plays Sam Winchester on Supernatural, but he is also just a guy. A guy who battled with depression for a lot of his life, and never quite knew when it was time to give up.
He spoke about his depression not long ago, and continues to speak about it at conventions, although it's always for a positive intention.
He has this motto; always keep fighting, and it stands for him and every other person on the planet that is suffering from depression or addiction or suicidal tendencies or mental illness.
At San Diego Comic Con this year, Jared was in the Nerd HQ session with a room full of Supernatural fans, and they were all talking, you know, making jokes and making us laugh our asses off.
He was with Jensen and Mark, and this fan asked him a question about what a scene in Supernatural that reflected on him the most.
Jared says, "I think the end of season 8, when Sam was at that church, and told Dean about what he confessed."
Season 8 scene: "You know what I did? Do you know what I confessed in there, Dean? I confessed about how many times I've let you down."
And Jared continues, "when I first saw that script, I almost lost it. All I could think was: they're writing my fucking life story. You know, I have the complex of looking at the people I love and thinking, you know, I hope I haven't let you down," in which he looks directly at Jensen with tears in his eyes.
We all think about how strong Jared is, how brave, and how happy, but really, he's just someone who isn't afraid to keep fighting for himself. So yes, of course there are times when Jared breaks, and he realizes that when he does break, it is no measure of his strength.
A lot of people know about the time when Jared went back to his trailer after shooting and just broke down, and the producers told him to go home for a few days to be with his family, and they'd close up set for a little bit.
We know about the time that Jared took a break from being around people, and he knew he was ready to snap then, too. He went home to be with his family and missed out on a big convention, only to put in his bio on Twitter "I'm trying to do the best that I can".
I constantly have so much appreciation for Jared, not only because of how hard he's fought, but for how hard he's worked to spread the act of being strong. He's such a nice guy, inside and out, and does everything he can for the people he loves, including his fans.
Jared Padalecki deserves the world, and for that, I will continue to love and appreciate him with all of his being. As Jensen says "Jared is a big guy with a big heart, and sometimes he doesn't know when to stop giving."
So happy birthday, Jared, and I hope you have a wonderful day with Gen and Tom and Shep and probably Jensen and his family.
I love you, and so does the rest of the Supernatural fandom.
xx
