Makayla

It's officially time for classes to start learning, which is both fun and torturous at the same time. Currently, I'm in Potions. Louis, like always, is in the same class as me every period.

We stand next to each other as Professor Slughorn starts teaching. As I glance around the classroom, I notice some sixth years in the class. Not just any sixth years. Gryffindors and Slytherins... Oh great...

Draco subtly waves me over and I excuse myself from Louis before walking over. He immediately starts whispering.

"What are you doing here?" he mumbles.

"I think we got put into a kids class," I whisper in return.

"That makes no sense."

"I know."

"Maybe you two are just dumb."

I smack his arm and return to Louis.

"What was—"

"Nothing," I say.

Class goes on and I notice that Harry, who arrived late with Ron, has a different textbook than everyone else. The cover is more worn and faded. When I ask him about it, he just shrugs me off. Weird.

This better not be anything like that diary fiasco from third year.

Later on in the week, I notice more and more how different the book is from everyone else's. Harry is unable to do the projects effortlessly while everyone else struggles. It's odd.

Today, we're learning about a certain potion. It's called Amortentia, which is a love potion—the most powerful. That's not all we're learning about, it's just the only one I've recognized.

"I made some concoctions this morning," Slughorn explains. "Anyone want to take any guesses?"

"Well, the middle one is Amortentia," I say.

"That would be correct!" he exclaims. "Would you like to explain what Amortentia is, Miss Malfoy?"

I sigh, partially annoyed, "Well, it's the strongest love potion ever crafter. Its scent is designed to reflect whom or what you're attracted to. For example—" I take a step forward, "—I smell... dark chocolate, dog fur, fresh parchment, hazelnut, mint, and cheap cologne."

"The fact that you can tell it's cheap isn't surprising at all," Louis laughs.

"I'm rich, get over it, I retort playfully, a smile on my face.

"Excellent job Malfoy!" Slughorn exclaims.

"You know you can call me Makayla right?" I ask.

"Oh, right..." he mutters. "I must apologize, I—"

"No need sir. I just prefer the name that actually connects to me rather than," I glance at Draco before continuing, "a certain group of people."

"Well, in that case, I shall continue. Before we move on to the other concoctions, I'd like for everyone to come up to the cauldron and describe what they smell."

Draco walks over and takes a quick whiff of the potion. His face turns sour.

"Apples, parchment, and grass..." he mumbles.

"Gross?" I tease.

"She smells like a farm, okay?"

"Sounds like you know who it is."

He groans, "Shut up!"

I smile as Louis steps up, "We'll talk later."

Louis sniffs the Amortentia, a small smile hiding behind his lips as he says, "Perfume, acrylic paint, wood—no, elm wood, cat hair, milk chocolate, and sunflowers..."

"How can you know that it's elm wood?" Mattheo asks as he enters the room, fashionably late with Ann.

"Well she's rich so—"

"Alright shut up."

He just laughs as Harry steps up and perfectly describes Ginny Weasley. I only know that it's her for sure because I shared a room with her at the Burrow for the longest time. Her room wreaked of rosey smells. And the broomstick scents come from the fact that she's on the Gryffindor Quidditch team this year, duh.

"What do you smell, Annie?" Louis asks.

"Let's see..." she murmurs as she takes a step forward and smells the potion. Almost immediately, she dramatically coughs, waving her hand in the air as if to make the smell go away. "There's definitely cigarette smoke in there..."

I glance at Mattheo with a knowing smile. "Yeah? What else?"

"Uh... Fancy cologne—a lot of it, like it's overwhelming, metal, and sage?"

"See Louis? I'm not the only one who can determine the worth from how the cologne smells!" I exclaim.

"You both are just weird," he murmurs.

"What do you all smell?" Annie asks.

"I smell dark chocolate, dog fur, fresh parchment, hazelnut, mint, and—"

"Wait," she interrupts me. "DId you just say Hazelnut?"

"Yeah, why?"

"Because all Louis ever eats is Nutella!"

"You do know that Grayson has a Hazelnut cologne, right—?"

She doesn't let me finish before saying, "His parents are dentists. That cologne wouldn't be cheap!"

"How'd you—"

"I was spying."

"I'd say that's creepy, but that's normal for you..." I mutter.

Although she is terrifying, I'm glad that Annie got put in this class accidentally as well. She's enjoyable to be around, which is why I haven't been moping around about Jordyn alone in my dorm. Annie and I both have been mourning together and she really knows how to cheer someone up. Thank God for people like Annelise Noel Lupin.

"Mattheo!" I exclaim. "Your turn!"

"I hate you..." he murmurs as he steps up and smells the scents from the cauldron. "Uh... Parchment paper, strawberries, roses, vanilla, and coffee. Gross."

I stifle a laugh as the rest of the students smell the Amortentia. His scent is definitely Annie. He and I both knew it'd be her before he even stepped forward. He's liked her for longer than I could remember. Meanwhile, she's dating Preston, my brother. Though she's in that... predicament... I'm almost one hundred percent sure that her scent was Mattheo. Preston doesn't smell of sage. He's too gross to put that much effort into things.

When I look at Louis, I can tell that he also knows that they have some kind of thing for each other. The only difference is that he's mad. I don't blame him. When I found out that she was into my brother, I nearly shoved her off the Astronomy Tower. It's gross. Preston doesn't even wash his feet. SHE'S INTO THAT?

Class goes on and Slughorn has each of us compete for a small vial of Felix Felices—Liquid Luck. Obviously, Louis and I compete really hard to get it. Honestly, he needs it for our Quidditch season.

Note from Louis: WHAT THE HECK.

By the end of it, Harry and I tie. The class agrees on an arm wrestle (childish, but okay), so we sit across from each other and link hands. In no time, we start pushing on each other's hands. It's funny because I easily push his hand onto the table with no sweat.

Smiling, I take the Liquid Luck from Slughorn. The class starts to clear out except for Annie, Louis, and Mattheo.

"You gotta stop doing that," Mattheo mutters at a low volume so the others can't hear.

"Doing what?"

"Doing whatever it takes to make your eyes red."
