"what if i can't get in? how will i see you again?"  || nessa barrett

Makayla

I wake up to the sound of Chase and Kirsten arguing downstairs about something I can't make out. In all honesty, it's probably about the hot water in the shower or something. When I glance off the side of the bed, I see Kai at his desk, probably doing his homework. Nerd.

Since Preston is still recovering from the party's outcome, there was a bed open in his and Kai's room. For some reason, Father is being generous 24/7 and he let me take Preston's bed. He didn't say anything about the Christmas party. I'm not in trouble for harming my brother at all (yet) and it's starting to freak me out.

Slowly, I pull the sheets off of me and climb down the ladder to get on solid ground. Since I'm not exactly the subtlest person on the planet, Kai quickly notices I'm awake.

"Good morning, Makayla," he says, not really looking up from his papers.

"Morning..." I mumble, rubbing my eyes tiredly.

"Did you get enough sleep?" he asks.

I want to tell the truth. I want him to know I can never sleep. The nightmares about Cedric, Jordyn, and Sirius never go away and someone needs to know, but how do you tell your triplet brother that something might genuinely be wrong with you mentally and that you aren't and never will be the same person he grew up with? I'll tell you the answer: You don't.

So I do the first thing that comes to mind and say in the midst of a yawn, "Totally."

He doesn't ask any other questions as I leave the bedroom and make my way downstairs. From the outside of the attic door, all six of my cats rush after me when they see me. Kai wouldn't let them stay in the bedroom.

I enter the kitchen with Mackarel and his siblings crowding around my feet. There, Chase and Kirsten are screaming over what to have for Breakfast. Chase wants eggs and bacon while Kirsten wants French Toast. At the sight of me entering the room, they both turn to me and I can instantly tell where this is going.

"Makayla..." Chase starts.

"Should we have eggs and bacon or French Toast for Breakfast?" Kirsten finishes.

"Couldn't you get both?" I ask. "I mean, together, that's like a whole meal."

They smile the moment I speak and Chase exclaims, "That's a great idea, Makayla!"

"We knew you'd be able to help!" Kirsten randomly and sarcastically declares, but still has some sincerity in her tone.

I snort as I hear familiar footsteps come down the stairs. When I turn to see who it is, Father is just entering the kitchen.

"Thank you for calming the girls down, Makayla," he says as he pours himself a cup of coffee.

"No problem..." I mutter awkwardly as Draco, Kai, and Nora come downstairs.

"Good, everyone's here," Father says. "The Dark Lord wishes to meet with us today, so I say that it's preferred if you look your best or somewhat close to it."

"He's coming here?" I ask.

"Yes, darling," he says. "He should be here in under an hour."

Once he stops talking, everyone starts rushing upstairs. Father stops me, though.

"I must say," he starts, "I really appreciate you giving me a chance."

"Nora asked me to," I state.

He laughs lightly, "Of course... Anyway, this will be the first time you'll be meeting the Dark Lord in a kinder manner, so I'd prefer that you don't mention any deaths or resentment you have toward him."
