"i'm thankful for my sister even though sometimes we fight."   || alec benjamin

Kai

I sit in the Common Room across from Makayla in silence. She is painting God knows what while I'm just reading. It's nice to sit in a room with her and enjoy silence for once. That kind of stuff is rare.

"Kai?" she asks.

I spoke too soon.

"Yes Makayla?"

"I have a question."

Sighing, I mark the page I'm on and set it off to the side before saying, "Ask away."

"Do you think mum and dad actually love us outside of the Mark?"

I'm baffled by the question to the point that I must stare at her in shock for several seconds. The sad part is that I know what her answer would be.

"I think so, why?"

"Well... I just—don't you think they'd kill any of us with no hesitation if the Dark Lord only asked them to?"

"Makayla—"

"Or maybe they'd only do that to me."

"No..." I mutter, leaning forward in my seat. "They love you Makayla."

"Maybe mum..."

"Father loves you."

"Does he show it well?"

I go silent. He really doesn't. Honestly, he doesn't show it to any of us. Maybe Makayla is right on his part...

"Okay, so say that he doesn't love us," I say. "How would that affect you? You left years ago."

"Just because I left doesn't mean that I escaped," she explains, using magic to float an envelope in the air until it lands in my lap. "Read it."

I pick up the envelope, opening it and immediately noticing that father has signed it. He's been contacting her? Since when? I choose to ignore it as I start reading the letter.

"Dear my firstborn daughter," it starts, "I am aware of your lack of want to speak to me, but I send these letters in hopes for you to hear me out.

"You graduate from Hogwarts in a year, my darling. All your life, you've been selected to run the Malfoy family once you're of age and your absence has not changed that. With you and your siblings' mission on the Dark Lord's hand, it is best for you to return. Be a role model for your fellow Malfoys before the Dark Lord's temper starts running thin and the blood starts spilling. I am not bluffing.

"Draco is under the assistance of Snape, but that's not enough. Your duty is to aid him whenever it is necessary. I'll make sure that your duty is fulfilled one way or another.

"This Christmas, I expect your presence at the Dinner table. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity so I expect you to attend. Though I don't know why I say this as if you have a choice because you will be there.

"Sincerely your father, Lucius Malfoy."

"Makayla," I say firmly, "when did he send you this?"

"Last friday," she responds.

"And how long has he been writing to you?"

She hesitates, "Since the beginning of summer..."

I let out a frustrated sigh as I pinch the bridge of my nose and ask, "Why didn't you tell me?"

"I thought you'd be on his side..."

"Makayla, we're siblings. Not just that, but we share everything. Birthdays, parents, houses, facial features," I blurt out. "He may be my father, but you're my triplet sister. I'll go talk to him—"

"No!" she interjects.

"Why?" I retort.

"He'll kill you!"

"That's the best case scenario, sister," I say before rising from my chair and exiting the room, letter clutched in my hand.

Is this stupid? Absolutely! But I'd rather be stupid defending on third of me than stay quiet.
