Joe squeezed behind Ann as she brushed her messy hair. He washed his face in the sink, catching eye contact with her through the mirror both of them smiling softly.
"Let's not... talk about it." Ann sighed, trying to fix the smudged mascara under her eyes.
"Like... at all?" He frowned.
"No, like... in front of them."
"Okay, then what's your excuse for our absence?" He smirked, leaning against the sink.
"We were... talking." She shrugged.
"Ann... I love you, but you know you're like really terrible at lying." He chuckled.
Ann felt her heart drop at the three specific words said by him. He loved her. He still loved her.
"That's why you're going to do the talking, Mr. Perfectly Fine." She patted him on the shoulder and walked out of the bathroom.
They walked back to Nick and Pri's house, through the back door, thinking they could sneak in without causing a scene. But of course, all eyes turned to them, when they walked in the room.
"Daddy!" Willa jumped in his arms, as he picked her up.
Ann eyed the room, seeing looks full of confusion, question marks and concern. She plastered on a fake smile, trying to find the only eyes capable of saving her right now.
"Oh, good, you're here. Just in time. I need help with the salad." Pri came, just as if she was reading her mind, taking her hand and guiding her to the kitchen.
"Thank you." Ann sighed, as they closed the doors behind them.
"Are you okay?" She put her hands on her shoulders.
"I'm... fine." She shrugged, nervously looking back at the door.
Okay, this was a bad idea. Pri always knows when I'm lying, this is bad. I need Joe.
"What happened? Tell me everything."
"I... can't." She closed her eyes with a sigh.
"Ann, you were gone for like... couple of hours. Something obviously happened."
Ann laughed nervously, trying to find a way to escape, when a knock on the door saved her.
"Can I?" Joe said, walking in and closing the doors behind him.
"No, you can't, Joe, we're talking." She frowned.
"It's fine, Pri." Ann smiled, relieved to know she was saved.
"Okay... Can you tell me then what happened?" She sighed, focusing on Joe.
"What do you mean?" He asked casually, grabbing a piece of pepper from the counter.
"Uh-" she smacked his hand, causing the pepper to land on the floor. "Are you serious?" She asked with frustration.
"Are you serious? What did that pepper do to you?" He frowned, picking it up and throwing it in the trash. Ann covered her mouth, trying really hard not to laugh.
"I need answers. Now." She crossed her arms.
"No, you don't, because you're not our mom." He smiled, wrapping his arm around her shoulder. "And don't frown so much, you're gonna get wrinkles."
"Mother-" she brushed his hand off. "Get out of my kitchen."
"Thought you needed some help?" He smirked.
"You're not helping at all!" She said through clenched teeth.
"Nothing happened, Pri, if that's what you're wondering." He sighed. "We talked it all out and now we're back here at the party."
