They silently enjoyed breakfast on the balcony of the house, only the sound of cutlery breaking it. Ann played with the remains of the salad on her plate as she thought of a way to start the conversation.
But she was scared. She was scared to face the consequences of their actions and where will that take them.
She looked up at Joe, who had his eyes plastered at the view of the sea. He, feeling Ann's gaze on him, turned to face her and slid down his sunglasses. He put on his infamous smirk, making Ann look back instantly.
„Hey." He whispered, stretching out his hand on the table for Ann to grab it. She looked at it and sighed, joining their hands together. „I'm ready to talk if you are."
„I don't even know what to say, Joe." She said, still looking at the sea.
„Let's start with how you feel?"
„Horrible." She scoffed. „I did it to Josh twice now. Twice, Joe. And both those times it was with you."
„Well, technically... It was just a kiss." He shrugged.
„If we didn't stop ourselves it could have been more. And just the fact that I think about it and I want it is enough." She sighed, locking eyes with him.
„Maybe you should call him?"
„This is not a conversation for a phone call. I'll talk to him once we get back."
„Ann, I don't want you to think about it for the whole trip. We're here to press a pause button, remember?" He squeezed her hand lightly.
„Maybe... this trip was a mistake. I shouldn't have come here with you." She said, without much thinking, looking down at her plate.
She felt Joe's grip on her hand slowly slipping as he pulled back. She looked at him as he looked down, nodding his head lightly.
„Okay." He said softly, standing up from the table. „Thanks for the breakfast."
„Joe, I'm sorry, I-" She tried to say something that will make the situation better.
„It's okay, Ann. I get it." He smiled lightly at her as she noticed his eyes sparkling from tears that were building there.
„I didn't mean it like that, I..." She sighed as he disappeared inside with the empty plates. „Fuck..."
She sat still for a couple minutes, before going downstairs to talk it through with Joe. She looked around, but he was nowhere to be seen.
„Joe?" She screamed out.
„I'm here!" She heard his voice coming from the outside.
She walked out, seeing him sitting in the corner of the backyard, facing the sea, as he strummed his guitar.
She slowly walked up to him, sitting beside him on the grass. She brushed her arm nervously as she scanned his face to somehow read his mind.
„I want you to hear something." He smiled softly, focusing on his guitar as he started to play an unknown song for Ann.
She crossed her legs, getting more comfortable as she focused on him.
„You bury me with all the words
I didn't say, oh God, it hurts
The weight of you is on my chest
I take the blame, you take the rest..."He sang, closing his eyes as he poured all his emotions into the words he sang. He then slowed down the strumming and locked eyes with Ann.
„When you know, you know, you know
When it's time to stay
Time to go, to go, to go
I'm not afraid to say that I hope
That I hope, I hope, I hope
I hope you feel the same
When you know, you know, you know
It's always been you..."
