I set the chip onto a neighboring workbench, and began attaching the lifelines to the inside of his head. He needed these to stay... alive... until I could finish. I was going to need my screwdriver for this next panel.

I turned around.

"MUMBO, NOOOOO!"

Thoom

The mallet hit the workbench less than a centimeter from where my hands lay covering the chip.

"I need him alive Mumbo. You have no idea-"

"You have no idea Grian! You have no idea what he did to me. What he said to me. He's been nothing but hurt and trouble since you made him! He needs to go-"

"No Mumbo! I need him! And after this, he's never going to hurt anyone ever again. I promise you that. He's..." I trailed off. Tears rolled down my cheeks like a faucet, and I picked up the chip as I walked over to another worktable.

Mumbo stood somewhat bashfully aside as I got to work.

Reaching into my pockets I pulled out the other chip. It was completely singed, and even melted at a few places, but otherwise nearly identical to NPC's. Prying open the casing revealed the damage was definitely not just external. I pulled out my soldering iron, and started to mend.

All was finished. My hands trembled as I replaced the capsule top in NPC's head. I let out a breath as I flicked the switch back on.
