Chapter 4 - On My Own

CHAPTER 4

Kota pov

I just walked out the garage door and was about to get in my car, when I noticed a moving van in the driveway across the street. That's strange, I thought. My neighbors just moved in, maybe a week ago.

As the van backs out of the drive, I look in the large window. There in the passenger seat, sits the most beautiful girl I've ever seen. Long blond hair, a perfect heart shaped face, and large scared eyes.

She's so pretty, that I freeze in place and automatically start counting. 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10. By the time I get to 10, the van has already driven down the street and disappeared from view.

I hope she's not moving, I would love to get to know her. I glance down at my watch, crap; I need to get moving if I am going to get to our family meeting on time. I can't be late or Mr. B's going to be pissed. I'll have to keep my eye out for the pretty blond later.


Sang pov

Father drives the van out of the half circle of Sunnyvale Court and hits the highway. The highway meets the interstate a couple of miles away and we are heading east into Charleston.

Soon we pull off the interstate and after a short drive; we pull into an apartment complex. There's a swimming pool near the front, filled with families playing in the water.

There are tennis courts and a large pond in the middle of two fountains. The whole place looks like a resort. I'm shocked at how nice this place looks, never expecting anything so grand for me.

Father looks at me and sneers "This is the only place I could find on such short notice, so don't expect a penthouse suite. This place is expensive, so I might find you a smaller, cheaper place soon." I quickly look down at my hands in my lap, not wanting to anger him more than I already have.

He pulls the van up to the last building in the complex and motions for me to get out. He hands me my new apartment key and barks at me "Go up and unlock the door. It's the next to the last door on the right, room 204."

I run up the stairs and stop in front of the door with the number 204 on it. This is such a big step and I never thought it would happen so soon. I'd dreamed about what my future might hold, but this was not something I was able to imagine.

With trembling hands, I put the key in the lock, turn the key, and open the door. I turn my shoulders until the sunlight shows the light switch on the wall and flick it on.

As I walk in the door, I notice a tiny kitchenette to the right of the door. I peer in and notice a small window over the sink. I really like that I'll be able to look out my window as I do dishes.

I move further in and see a small door. I open it up and see that it's a nice size closet, for such a small space. At least I'll have somewhere to hang my coat and clothes.

Walking a little further in, I notice another door. I open the door, turn on the light, and see a small bathroom, with a tiny sink, toilet, and a gleaming bathtub. It looks and smells so clean.

I turn around and look at the rest of the room. There's nothing else, but a large open area. No bedroom door, but I guess I won't need one anymore.

The apartment's small, but I think I'll be able to make it feel like home. At least, more of a home than the one I just left.

My tour took about two minutes, but my ears hear a stomping sound heading towards the door. I sprint over to the door, just in time to hold it open for father. "Get your ass down to the van and start unloading your crap or I'm going to throw it on the sidewalk and leave." He shouts.

It took us about 30 minutes to move all of the furniture and boxes, up to my new place. "Since you're just starting out, I'll be generous and give you $500.00. You had better make it last." He sneers.

"After that, I will send you $75.00 every two weeks, to this address. If you piss away the money, it will suck to be you. If you need anything else, I suggest you find a job" he coldly states.

I watch him throw the $500.00 down on my little kitchen counter, turn and stride out of the apartment and my life without a backwards glance. I'm well and truly on my own now
