43 | Going In Alone

A knock on the door startles me. I place the second test down the counter, which confirms the first one. It only takes thirty seconds to appear crystal clear on the stick.

"Just a minute," I call out.

"It's Townes," She says. I quickly crack the door open to see her. Concerns were etched across her face.

"Please tell me you haven't turned to drugs, and that's what I'm about to find in this bathroom?" I step aside, welcoming her in. Her eyes move to the counter, and they widen. She quickly looks back to me for confirmation.

"Are you?" She asks, and in return, I nod.

Her face softens in response. The faintest chuckle leaves her mouth. "How are you feeling about this?" she asks. She knows how desperately I wanted this, but now I am all so messed up.

"We are having a baby," I laugh slightly with my words. A feeling of delight fills me as I register it. Townes sighs in relief and I watch as her eyes begin to water. She's quick to pull me into a hug, this time more gently than before.

"Oh my god, you are having a baby!?! " she says aloud in excitement. "Oh, hell yeah!" Her excitement causes me to laugh, and she steals the stick from me. She holds it close to her eyes in inspection.

"I peed on that," I say, and then it fell out of her hands and flattened to the ground. Sure, the cap was on it, but I still found it funny.

"I forgot about that part," she picks up the other end from the ground and stares at it once more in excitement. "He's going to be thrilled, Alina," She assures me.

"I'm going to tell him when he gets back from Vienna. Luckily, I won't be all alone for Valentine's Day now. I need to book an appointment and everything. Just to see if it's all okay," Townes nods her head at me in understanding.

"I'll help in any way; let's get you that appointment," she says, pulling out her phone from her pocket.

"What about work?" I ask.

"Screw work," she mumbles.

"My boss just put me on probation," I add. This causes her to look up in confusion, "What?" She spits out quickly.

"She claims I am a liar. Fired Antony and put me on probation in front of everyone," I explain. I watch as her face turns red and the vein on her forehead pops out. "She didn't explain, and I told her today about my attack."

"Oh, if you need a damn lawyer, I'll get her ass," she quickly turned to the door.

"Townes, wait-"

"No, I'm going to get her ass! What a bitch, you don't deserve this. I mean, come on, you're literally pregnant?" Townes opened the door to the bathroom, but I grabbed her hand before she could go further.

"She obviously doesn't know that if we just found out. I can handle it, and now Antony will just be on my security detail. He'll stop it from going too far, come on. Let's not make too much of a fuss about this Townes. It's okay."

Townes sent me back to work with crackers and ginger ale. She also sent me an itinerary for my appointment later today after work. I didn't understand how she scored one that fast. I have a funny feeling she dropped my name, which made life much harder.
