Kingston Romano
I didn't deserve to breathe the same air as her. That look on her face. The one that told me she herself was losing hope. The one that told me her heart was shattered and I stomped all over it like it was nothing.
It looked me dead in the eye and I had to act like I didn't care. Like it didn't almost kill me on the inside. To tell her we should give up for now on our dream. One she'd worked so hard for and didn't deserve to give up. But I was unstable with our safety and living arrangements. I needed to sort it out before allowing her to be at higher risk.
Carrying our child with those who are after her. It wasn't logical and it pained me to prevent her. To stop her for a few months. She deserved to be a mother when she'd like and it deserved to be pain free. Instead I made it even more painful.
She was in our room sobbing and had been for three hours. It got quiet about thirty minutes ago and it signaled she was asleep. I had no other choice but to pack my things and go.
She didn't deserve me. How I was treating her, my father was wrong. This wasn't the way to do things and I figured that out the second I brought up stopping her injections. It was like the hope was wiped from her eyes and that spark I one saw died. I was the monster I was meant to become to protect her.
However, it felt too far to retract back from. She deserved her space and I'd give her that. In the meantime, I'd kill anyone to find them. The photo of the man I have even my own enemies after, a bounty on his head. The man who shot my wife, Clark Kovac. Leader of the Hungarian Mafia, a man who'd been after me for years. He found me and unfortunately my wife and easily took his aim.
He'd been following me for weeks. He knew where we lived and who Alina was. With him walking the earth she'd be dead. I had a truce with his sister Carina Kovac. She despised her brother. After sweeping the title out from under her, he sabotaged her in all ways. Robbing her of her title and framing her to her father. She'd do whatever it would take to get even.
Even if it meant killing him. After hearing about what'd he done to my wife, a peer from college at that. She wouldn't hesitate to help me. Attending the same school as Alina, she knew her through mutual friends and clubs. I'd been watching her as well, studying the habits of Carina.
I wasn't an idiot in trying to get what I want. However she might just be the key to it. To his cold and dead body in my arms. She had the same mission, because he'd been trying to kill her for months. She knew to get back in favor with her father was to take control, to take her power back.
So I'd be in Prague where she was hiding. Me, Enzo and her husband Alek wouldn't stop until we bled. Until my wife was safe from all harm. I'd burn the world and kill whoever if it just meant that she'd be okay. Even if it meant hurting her along the way.
We'd be okay again, we'd have to be. She'd need to understand why I did and if she didn't I'd spend my life paying for it. Because I'd do anything for her, to save her. It needed to be this way, for me to be cold and distant. To make the match seem forced and distant. If he knew what she really meant to me, he'd do anything to kill her.
He's already tried to take that from me and I'd rather die than let it happen again. I'd lay my life on the line just for her to live a normal life. One away from this one, the one she didn't deserve to be thrown into.
It was my demons to burden, not hers. She was innocent, a laugh that only held sweet intentions and kindness. I never wanted her to be on the other end of the gun holding it and firing in the name of our family, of my work. It's not the life she signed up for. It was the one I forged her name onto.
