Kingston Romano
Serious but stable condition seemed like the worst news I'd ever heard. Because though it was meant to be reassuring, how could it?
Alina got out of surgery eight hours ago. They weren't sure when she'd wake. I'd just been alone with her in this room, except for when the doctor would check up. He seemed off about something. I refused any company of visitors. I was mad at myself; he should have been dead. However, he wasn't and almost killed my wife.
She wouldn't be able to walk for a couple of weeks due to the damage to her back. The doctor stated that, fortunately, he missed any vital organs.
"Kingston," the sound of Matt's voice surprises me. Her brother stood in the doorway, looking like he'd seen a ghost. I'd left him in the dark on the chase for his sister. Knowing him, he'd get himself killed.
"How are you-"
"Antony told me you'd need me. Kingston, what the hell happened to her?" Matt's eyes showed a new type of fear. He didn't fully step into the room; he remained distantly staring at her.
Observing every tube in her chest and beep from the monitor. Listening to every little rise and fall of her chest, breathing so subtly like I had been doing ever since she made it out of the operating room.
There's a shift in his eyes, and that's when I know he's spotted it—the tiny bump blossoming out from her gown. He stares shockingly, unsure of what to say. Then Matt's eyes move to me.
"She's pregnant?" He asks incredulously.
Not a person knew besides me or her friends. It was probably cruel for her family to find out this way when she was dying. Holding on for dear life and her husband's in a shell without answers.
"Mr. Romano," her doctor enters the room abruptly leaving me and Matt's conversation in the air. "Police are here wanting a statement and descriptions of the man."
The police wouldn't get anywhere with Clark. This was beyond their power and anything they could do, and it felt useless to waste my time on them.
"You should contact Hawking; he secured his wife. Alina's safety is all we can discuss right now," Matt interrupts, standing between me and the doctor. "Police won't be any use of time, especially with something so urgent." He shoots the doctor a look, and understanding is heard.
"I could ask your father to deal with them..." Matt suggests. We both know I want him to do it, not my father, who can't seem to do anything. Ever since he stepped down, he's been on vacation, and when I gave him an inch, he couldn't seem to fully step into position again, even with his long-lasting complaints.
Matt stared at me, and I remained blank. Every word echoed, and the ground below me felt as if it was shifting. I didn't say a word, and he took that as a no and swiftly removed himself from the room to deal with them, leaving the doctor yet again with me. He was a man who graduated from Yale University School of Medicine, a man who should be capable of saving my wife.
Yet he seemed a bit shaken up to be in my presence, with that same look as earlier, which only made me feel worse about my wife's current state. She is the one for whom my heart beats. Alina is the only person in the room who knows anything logistically; everyone else simply lacks intelligence. She fails to notice it.
