Chapter 110

Nat's POV
I sat cross-legged on the worn wooden floor of the dimly lit apartment, my eyes focused on the building outside the window. The faint glow of dawn began creeping through the old blinds. A thin mattress lay on the floor where Yelena was still asleep, her blonde hair a messy halo around her head. I had been sitting watch all night, my instincts refusing to let me relax despite the quiet outside.

Now, as the first rays of sunlight painted the apartment, Yelena stirred, her brows furrowing before her eyes blinked open. She stretched, groaning softly as she realised I was still sitting there.

"You idiot, You were supposed to wake me up," Yelena mumbled, her voice thick with sleep as she sat up, narrowing her eyes at me. "What were you thinking?"

I shrugged, my lips twitching into a faint smirk. "You looked like you needed the rest."

"That's not the point," Yelena shot back, brushing her hair out of her face. "You need sleep too. You're not a robot, no matter how much you pretend to be."

"I got some rest, I sat here and read my book," I replied, my tone casual. "And I've been through worse. Don't worry about me."

Yelena sighed, giving me a pointed look. "You're impossible, you know that? Next time, wake me up. No arguments."

I chuckled softly and leaned back against the wall, "Fine. Next time." But we both knew I would probably do the same thing again.

Yelena stretched and stood up, moving toward the window as she gestured for me to get some rest.

"Go on, Nat," Yelena said firmly. "I'll take watch. You're practically falling asleep sitting up."

I opened my mouth to protest but stopped when Yelena crossed her arms and gave me a stern look. I sighed, nodding reluctantly, the weight of exhaustion tugging at me.

"Fine," I muttered, standing and stretching briefly before making my way to the thin mattress. I sank down onto it with a soft groan.

Before lying down, I pulled my phone out from my pocket. My lips curved into a faint smile as I opened Claire's message thread, thinking about the photo Claire had slipped into my bag.

Nat: Good morning, solnyshko (sunshine/sweetheart). Thank you for the photo. Found it last night, it made me smile. Im going to try get some sleep, I'll talk to you soon. I love you. - 0550

After hitting send, I set the phone down beside me, resting my head on my arm as my body finally relaxed. The steady rhythm of Yelena pacing by the window, coupled with the thought of Claire, was enough to lull me into sleep almost instantly.

Claire's POV
I stretched lazily in bed, the late morning sunlight streaming through the bedroom window. For once, I had allowed myself the luxury of sleeping in, something I rarely indulged in. Reaching over to the nightstand, I grabbed my phone and unlocked it, I saw a message from Nat, a smile spread across my face.

Claire- Good morning, gorgeous. Glad the photo made you smile. How's the mission going? Did you not sleep at all last night? Miss you. I love you too! - 0920

It wasn't until a few hours later, as I sipped on a smoothie I had made after training and checked my phone again, that I realised Nat still hadn't replied yet. I frowned slightly, a flicker of worry crossing my mind before I reminded myself that Nat was probably busy, or hopefully sleeping.

I decided to send Yelena a message.

Claire- how's the mission going? - 1236

I got up and made my way outside, just for a walk and to get out. As I walked along, I received a message.
