Three Rain x Phantom chapters in a row? hell yeah 😭

The rejection was harder for Phantom than it was for Rain. Rain had known from the start how Sodo really felt. That he didn't like him or Phantom the way they loved him. That's why the rejection they got that night didn't weigh so much on him. But the young quint on the other hand, took it very badly. You could say it broke his heart. Maybe he had guessed it deep down as well, but hearing it had been different. And then when the realization kicked in, he could barely keep his emotions in check. But Rain had full understanding for him. He knew how he felt, because in a way he didn't feel much different himself. He had just accepted it already, Phantom didn't.
But Rain had told himself before that he would help Phantom through it. He had wished to have someone to help him through heartbreak before, and he didn't want Phantom to go through all that torture alone, or bring up the courage to ask for the help. He would just provide it without question, except if Phantom purposefully pushed him away. Then he wouldn't pester him.
The night when Sodo had announced his decision, Phantom had cried. Rain had noticed how much he tried to hold back, but in the end heartbreak could weigh heavily on someone. When Rain noticed, he quickly shifted closer to him and pulled him into a tight hug. Phantom clutched onto him without question. Burying his face in the older's neck, he let his tears finally flow freely. He had always trusted Rain a lot, so he didn't mind showing his emotions in front of him that much. But it's not like he could've held them back anyways. Or as if he would actually realize it.
"It's okay... you'll find someone else to become happy with, yeah?" Rain whispered softly as he began to trace gentle patterns on the younger's back. For some reason he felt guilty, even though he had done nothing wrong at all. He never liked seeing his friends and family cry. "I- I-..." Phantom took a deep shuddering breath and clung even tighter onto Rain, "I want s- someone... t- to... care f- for me..." he paused and pressed his head more into the others chest. "Someone to... to h- hold me. L- l-... love me." Rain paused for a moment, his hand froze, but his hold on Phantom remained tight. He felt his heart breaking into a thousand pieces, hearing Phantom choke out these words.
Now that he though about it, all this time they had waited for Dew's decision, the water ghoul had thought more about Phantom than about himself. And in comparison to Phantom he had taken the rejection quite well. Maybe he had only looked out for Phantom in the first place. Only worried for him. Maybe he cared more for the young ghoul than he initially thought. As he came to that realization, he noticed something else. Maybe Rain could distract Phantom enough. And maybe they could make each other happy, if they both couldn't be happy with Sodo. But then he also didn't want to take advantage of Phantom that way. He was hurt and vulnerable right now, so was this really the right thing to do?
'Somebody to love me'. The words echoed through Rain's mind, sounding almost like a dare. Like a wish. Like a plead. He would love Phantom if that's what he wanted. He would do anything for him. Hold him, care for him, listen to him, comfort him, listen to him... whatever he wanted, and whatever he needed. He dared speaking again, though he almost sounded vulnerable himself now, "am I not?" Phantom sniffled and looked up to Rain with a questioning gaze, making the water ghoul's heart rate picking up. "I mean... am I not holding you right now? Am I not caring? Am I not-" he paused, swallowed thickly and forced himself to say it, in hopes to not make a major mistake, "loving?"
Rain watched Phantom's expression shift. First to something like confusion, then understanding, surprise and eventually embarrassment. Rain smiled, seeing that Phantom at least didn't seem to hate him. "You know Phantom... I care a lot about you. Really I do. And I don't want us to sit here and cry about Sodo. He's happy with Swiss, and we should be happy for him too," the older said. Phantom swallowed thickly and nodded. He still had trouble thinking about it, but being in Rain's arms like this, and listening to his soothing voice did surprisingly good on comforting him.
