M A G N U S
The cigarette burn at the pad of my thumb as a waff of smoke blows through my mouth and nose.
"At this point you're just delaying the inevitable. Might I ask, why, Magnus?" The Sage asks for the fifth time in the past week.
I was supposed to hand over Ellora to Vittorio almost two weeks ago. And I haven't even tried taking her to the Coven since the first two times.
I blow a circle of smoke through my mouth, clutching the phone a little bit tighter to my ear. "Trust me. I have a plan."
I don't. I absolutely have no plan other than keeping Ellora safe and tucked away in my mansion from the whole world. What started with a well planned thing has now now into my maniac need to keep her to myself. Just to myself.
"From the sounds of it, Vittorio is starting to get suspicious." The sage says.
That's right. Last night after the shenanigan with Marshall Blackwood, and Ellora went back to sleep...it was early dawn by that point. And only after double checking my mansion for any other unwanted human beings, I had left for the Coven.
Vittorio was infact becoming impatient. I was supposed to bring him the location of the notes from Ellora two weeks ago. When the two week mark was over, he had demanded I hand over Ellora to him, and he'd take care of her. I had somehow managed to ask for another week.
It's been two.
Naturally he was very impatient by now. Work on the Shiva has been on hold for the past two weeks. The works of the Coven, the brotherhood I had sworn into ten years back, has been on hold for the past two weeks. All because of this little siren in my bed who has managed to creep under my skin, inside my veins.
"Are you sure about this plan of yours Magnus?" The Sage asks after a pause.
"No." I say blowing another whiff of smoke.
Silence ensures the mansion.
"I've known you since you were a wee tenager, Magnus. I knew the nineteen year old boy who didnt hesitate one second to kill a man on duty because he was aiming at your father. I knew the twenty year old boy who didn't hesitate to take his father's job of killing men on a daily basis. I knew the twenty two year old man who didn't hesitate to rub off his entire existence from the face of the earth and become a whole new person. I knew the guy who didn't know how to hesitate, he only knew what he had to do." The Sage says quietly. "But this man today, who is hesitating over a girl...I don't recognise."
I don't answer, instead I silently blow off another whiff of smoke, the drag of nicotine intensifying the air, and pumping my nerves.
"You have come so far Magnus. Don't back out now. Ten years of your life and a whole new identity later, you cannot change your mind-"
"I am not changing my mind-"
"-because if you do they will kill you and this time not even I can save you." The Sage finishes, silencing me in a second.
"I am not changing my mind." I finally say. "I am just changing our plan. A tiny. Little. Bit." Changing it in a way that Ellora never has to face Vittorio or his men. Changing it in a way that they don't even come within ten feet radius of her.
"Today is The Dark Scientists foundation day." I continue, "I'm taking Ellora with me to give Vittorio the act he wants to see, just to keep his trust on me a little while longer- to buy me some more time."
The Sage is silent for a minute. Before saying, "Are you sure about this Magnus?"
"Yes."
"Okay...but how will you convince Ellora to go along with the plan? She's a stubborn headed girl, quiet but firm...just like her father." She adds with an after thought.
