NOVA
The following four days passed in an easy blur of Christmas spirit. We have feasted, celebrated, relaxed, even cried in the days leading up to the new year. It was my favourite time of the year, and it was ending so soon. And yet... the easy blur was dampened with the hollowness of an empty pack.
The holes remained unfilled. Person-sized holes of people that I missed dearly. I wasn't sure if they would ever be filled.
As my due date grew nearer, I was clinging onto my hope of the year ending in a positive. It was naïve of me to think my brother or my beta couple would appear on my doorstep, but I hoped with all of my soul that they would. That I could wake up and realise it was just a dream, or somehow I was in a coma. Perhaps I hurt myself by training and-
"Fuck." I cursed as another tightening rippled across my stomach.
Rose stopped what she was doing, rushing to my side. "I really think we should go to see Kate."
I clung to the edge of the crib with gritted teeth, glaring holes into the wall before me. These weren't Braxton Hicks anymore.
That was one the sharpest one I have had.
"Nova..." Rose trailed, rubbing my back. "Should I call the alpha?"
"No." I inhaled sharply as it subsided. "The bond is closed because we are both busy. He doesn't need to know."
Rose frowned, and I prepared myself to be scolded. "You are stupid."
I raised an eyebrow, not expecting those words to come out of her mouth. "What?"
"This happened last time, and within moments, your water broke." She stated. "Don't put yourself or the baby at risk here."
"I won't." I frowned. "That is the hardest one so far... I know I can be stubborn, Rose, but I am not in denial this time."
She raised an eyebrow. "So, let's go."
"I need to finish this first." I shook my head, gesturing to the baby clothes. "For my sanity. I need to pack a bag, too."
"Okay, that won't take long." She shrugged. "That's why I am here."
"We will do this. Time their length and go from there." I stated.
"No. We do that and then contact your mate and Kate for advice." Rose cocked her head. "Otherwise, I will tell him right now."
I hummed, eying her confident stance. Rose was a great stand-in beat female. She was confident and kind; a perfect mixture of both and enough to put me in my place if I needed it.
"Okay, deal." I breathed.
She dropped her scowl, grinning and softly clapping her hands. "Yay! Baby three coming soon!"
I rolled my eyes with a soft laugh and turned back to our task at hand. As the twins slept in their nursery, Rose and I were organising the new baby's things. My nesting was coming rather delayed this time around, and the organisation of clothes and blankets didn't happen. Thankfully, it kicked in two days ago, and everything was clean and ready to be put away. Rose was helping me organise it all.
She had easily taken on a nanny role, and yes, it meant that I was also an infant in that situation. Her relationship with Sean grew her confidence day by day, and I knew that when, and not if, Calida comes back, she won't even recognise her.
It's been a long time away, but also a short time for someone to change so much.
I often wonder what Rose had been like as a child. She was still scared to contact her family. Their past was not the easiest, but I felt content knowing she had found herself a new family with us.
