PHOENIX

Harriet proved to be a dead end. After she confessed to sending the text, she admitted that she only did it because the wolves threatened her. I told her I would handle it, and that her family would be safe, but she would not go without punishment.

Apollo continued to cause problems for my family. His involvement wove deep into the intricate details of life, so much so that it had become normal. He had witches on his side, and rogues and fangs in his pocket. He was a powerful lycan, so why did he resent everybody so much?

I had two options here.

I keep searching for my witch, or I look further.

Scratching my beard, I stared down at my phone with a frown. I had scrolled its entirety, hoping that one name in my contacts would stand out as an aid for information.

I was a King's Alpha; I had many contacts. But none of them I could trust. Half of the alphas hated me for my natural luck, and the other half were so blind to what was going on around them, they may as well live in a cave.

A light rap on my door had me call a soft come in. My gaze lifted as Leo walked in, and I instantly eyed the newborn in his arms. Well, she was ten weeks old already, and just as eager to look around as her sister.

"Leo, what brings you here?" I wondered.

"I finished my shift, but I wanted to speak with you before I went home." He shrugged.

I hummed, gesturing for him to sit. "What is it?"

"The human in the cells." He tickled his daughter's stomach. "Does she need to be down there?"

"Yes." I frowned. "Why do you ask?"

"She just cries a lot." He muttered.

"So? She is to be punished." I stated.

"Yeah, but... She was coerced into it, wasn't she?"

"Then she should've gone to higher authority." I narrowed my gaze. "Until we decide on her punishment, she awaits a trial."

"Nova is down there right now." He murmured. "I'm worried about her."

I sighed, knowing that she was. She visited Harriet every day, feeling sorrowful for the human. My mate was one of the most empathetic people I knew. Nova, much like Leo, knew that it wasn't Harriet's first choice. My mate believed that she was genuine, and so did I, but it still didn't mean she gets away unscathed.

I release her. Who knows what actions she may choose to take next?

Protecting my family is, and always will be, my main priority. Keeping her here protected everyone and could give us more information or sway about our missing twin.

"She feels the same way as you." I shrugged. "But I am keeping Harriet here for everyone's protection."

"What about hers?" He cocked his head. "Her family?"

"They won't touch her family." I scoffed. "The moment we release her from here, they will go after her. It wouldn't surprise me if they already know she was missing. Her sister works at the hotel, so I have no doubt that they have already questioned her."

"Do we know who is behind it all yet?"

I paused, rolling my tongue across my teeth. The baby in his arms gurgled, and I distinctly remember Nova saying she was called Remi. Much like her ten-month-old sister, Remi had big blue eyes and soft blonde hair. Her eyes widened when she realised I was looking at her, and I couldn't help but smile.
