I was eternally grateful that Phoenix came back in one piece. He didn't have a single scratch or mark, so I knew the trip had been relatively uneventful. The moment he was back, he came straight to our home. I couldn't let him go from my arms for what felt like hours. It must've only been a few minutes because soon Belle was tugging on his trousers for his attention.

Phoenix bent down, scooping her up into her arms. She babbled 'da' excitedly, smacking his cheeks with glee. Phoenix's wolf rumbled, rubbing his cheek across Belle's head with joy.

I glanced over my shoulder, looking for Wolf, and found him sitting on his play mat. He was watching Phoenix with a curious gaze, but didn't approach him yet. He was clever and knew Phoenix would come to him.

That, or he just wasn't bothered.

The few days' distance probably felt like sleeping to him.

It must be nice to have no concept of time. No concept of what was to happen, or even the dangers of the future. Life, death, and in between were merely nothing to them.

Much to my assumption, Phoenix placed Belle down and crawled on his hand and knees toward Wolf. Wolf seemed to glare at him, studying the hairy grown up as it lowered himself to his height. I sat down on the sofa as Phoenix called his name softly, grinning when Wolf smiled at his father.

Stubborn little shit.

"Were you pretending you didn't like me, mister?" Phoenix cooed, tickling Freddy's tummy. "Were you angry at Daddy for leaving?"

My hands rested on my stomach, a soft hum of energy flowing through me. I felt content knowing Phoenix was back. The past few days have been easy, but I couldn't stop thinking of what he was doing. It wasn't even that long apart and yet it felt like forever.

"And finally." Phoenix murmured, crawling over to me.

I raised an eyebrow as he stopped before me, falling back to sit on his ankles. "What are you doing?"

His large hands pushed my t-shirt aside, before curling them around my stomach. He leaned closer, kissing the bump with a tenderness only I seemed to see. My heart fluttered in my chest, watching him say hello to the bump, and I curled my hands into his hair.

He gazed up at me before rising to kiss me softly. Once he was standing up, he looked around the house with a soft look in his eye.

"It's good to be home." He stated. "Even if it was only a couple of days."

"We missed you." I shrugged. "No matter how short it was."

He smiled, sitting back beside me. Belle had returned to her brother, stealing the building blocks from his hand. Freddy stared at her, frowning, before wailing and grabbing it back. Belle was faster, yanking it away from him again. Freddy huffed, his lower lip pouting. It made Belle pause and stare at him, before raising the block to her mouth to chew. Freddy sighed, realising he wouldn't win before he moved onto another block.

The maturity of a child so young astounded me.

He just gave up his toy to his sister because he couldn't be bothered to fight her.

Shaking my head, I turned to Phoenix. "So, what happened?"

His hand curled around my shoulder, pulling me into his side. "We found her."

"You did?" My eyes widened. "The human?"

"We did." He nodded. "Only, she isn't all human."

If possible, my eyes widened further. "She's a wolf?"
