Dear Diary
I slipped out through one of the back corridors, ducking my head low, trying not to attract any attention. The halls were quiettoo quietand I could feel my heartbeat in my throat as I made my way outside. The chill of the night air hit me instantly, but I didn't stop. I needed to breathe. I needed space.
Reaching the edge of the tree line behind the building, I slumped against a trunk, the cool grass beneath me, and finally let my guard drop. Pulling out my phone with slightly trembling fingers, I answered the call.
"Hello," I whispered, barely able to find my voice.
"SAGE?! SAGE, OH MY GOD, I'M SO SORRY!" His voice came through in a frantic rush, panicked, overwhelmed, and aching with regret.
"Hey, hey... calm down, stupid," I murmured with a soft chuckle, rubbing my face with one hand. Just hearing his voice settled something in my chest. He stopped abruptly, quiet for a second, then mumbled, "I should've called you sooner."
I leaned my head back against the bark, staring up at the night sky as a faint smile curled my lips. "I said it's fine, didn't I?"
"No... It's not," he said quietly, and something in his voice made my heart twist. "I know you're at U.A., but... can you please meet me? Just for a bit?"
I paused, biting the inside of my cheek. The rules at U.A. were strict, especially after the recent attacks. Sneaking out could land me in serious trouble... but I could hear the desperation in his voice. He needed me. And maybe... I needed this, too.
I sighed, already knowing I'd regret it if I didn't. "Of course," I said gently. "I may get into trouble, but... yeah. Of course."
It took effort and way too much risk, but I managed to sneak past the perimeter. The security bots didn't spot me, and I stuck to the blind spots in the camera paths, slipping through the shadows like I'd done this a hundred times. Just as I turned a corner near the outer wall, I ran smack into someone hard.
I looked up, startled, only to feel strong arms wrap around me in an instant, pulling me close.
"Hawks?" I breathed, eyes wide.
He didn't say a word at first. He just held me there, his wings folding protectively around me like a shield. For a moment, the world fell quiet again.
"I knew it was you sneaking out," he muttered against my hair. "You're lucky I caught you first."
I closed my eyes and leaned into the embrace, letting the warmth of it sink in. "Guess I'm always lucky when it's you."
