I stood frozen in the hallway of the Hokage building, my fingers just inches from the door. The warm breeze of Konoha ruffled my hair as i gathered my bearings, trying to push away the flood of emotions that threatened to overwhelm my. It had been so long—too long—and now, i was back. The village, familiar and welcoming as ever, had become a place that felt like a dream after everything i'd learned about my past.
I needed to see Tsunade, to hear from her what had happened while I was gone, and to find out where Hikaru and Kakashi were. Tsunade, being the Hokage, would surely know everything.
But as I stepped closer to the door of the Hokage's office, I was caught off guard. The low murmurs from inside the room reached my ears, voices blending together in hushed conversation. there was a meeting.
I hesitated, my hand hovering over the door handle. It would be impolite to barge in, even if i was desperate to see Tsunade. After a moment of thought, i made the decision to wait. I pressed herself against the wall, listening to the faint voices behind the door, my mind wandering back to the years i had spent with Hikaru, the family i had built. But now, it was time to confront the world i had left behind.
Minutes passed, and the murmur of voices began to quiet. The door creaked open, and one by one, figures filed out of the office. As they exited, i ducked into the open door, moving quickly but silently to slip inside before anyone noticed.
My heart raced as i entered the Hokage's office, the familiar scent of parchment and ink mingling with the faint smell of wood polish. The room was just as i remembered it—grand, yet somber, with tall windows overlooking the village i had always loved.
But something was off.
"Lady Hokage, I have returned and in need of your..." my words caught in my throat as the figure slowly turned around to face me.
For a split second, her mind failed to register what was happening.
It wasn't Tsunade. It was Kakashi.
Kakashi, in his Hokage robes, his silver hair a mess of familiar spikes, he wasn't wearing his headband and he was showing both of his eyes, and his mask only partially covering his face. His gaze met mine, and in that instant, all the words i had been rehearsing scattered to the wind. I had no idea what to say, no idea how to explain the whirlwind of emotions that flooded my chest.
Kakashi's eyes softened, but he didn't move from his seat. The silence between them felt thick, like the weight of time apart pressing down on them both.
My voice was barely a whisper as i took a step forward. "Kakashi... What—what are you doing here?"
Kakashi sat in the chair, hands folded neatly on the desk in front of him, his posture calm and composed despite the way his eyes lingered on her. The world seemed to hold its breath.
"I'm a Hokage now, Mayumi," Kakashi said quietly, his voice filled with a mixture of warmth and unspoken meaning. "I've taken over for Tsunade."
I blinked, a mix of surprise and confusion filling me. what happent while i was gone.
"I... I didn't think that..," i said softly, shaking my head. "I... I was gone for a month, or maybe a little longer. I didn't think Tsunade would pass it on so soon...did something happened to her?!"
Kakashi's expression grew more thoughtful, his eyes narrowing slightly as he observed her. " Mayumi, you've been gone for almost two years, Tsunade is fine.. everything is fine, the war is over." He paused, standing slowly and walking around the desk toward her. The air between them grew heavy with unspoken words.
"That can't be, no, it was a couple of month maximum i.."
"I'm glad you're back, Mayumi," Kakashi cut me off, his voice lowering. "But I wasn't sure you'd come back To me."
My pulse quickened at his words, and i suddenly felt like there was a vast distance between us, even though we were standing only a few meters apart. My mind was a whirlwind of thoughts and emotions. Kakashi was Hokage, the man who had once been the protector, the quiet observer—and now he was the leader of it all.
But what about me? What did i have to offer in this new reality?
"I didn't know what else to do," i murmured, feeling more vulnerable than i had in a long time. "I've been... lost. I had to find the truth. And now..." i trailed off, uncertain how to finish my sentence. The overwhelming need to share my feelings with him, to confide in him, was there. But there were so many unspoken thoughts, so many things i wasn't sure how to say.
Kakashi looked at me, his face still hidden by his mask, but his eyes spoke volumes. "It's okay, Mayumi. You don't have to explain everything now. I've been waiting for you to come back. Whatever happened... we'll figure it out together."
My heart fluttered, a wave of relief washing over me at the softness in his voice. Kakashi had always been there for me, a constant in my life, eversince i met him and now, more than ever, i felt the pull to reconnect with him.
the door opened and a man came informing Kakashi about his meeting.
"I... I need to go, find Hikaru," i said, my voice a little stronger now.
Kakashi's gaze softened even more. He nodded slowly, as though already knowing what i needed. "He's in the village, though he's been keeping a low profile."
"Thank you," i whispered, my voice a mixture of gratitude and something deeper—something that had always been between us, something neither of us had ever fully acknowledged.
Kakashi offered me a rare, soft smile. "You're welcome. And welcome home, Mayumi."
I felt the weight of those words, the comfort that they carried. Maybe everything had changed. But maybe, in the end, some things never did.
