I woke up feeling... okay. For once, no nightmares clawed at the edges of my mind, no strange memories flashing through my dreams. Just a quiet, dreamless sleep.

I blinked a few times, letting my eyes adjust to the dim morning light creeping through the window. Then, I heard it—a slow, steady breathing from across the room.

Kakashi.

I turned my head slightly, expecting to see him sitting against the door, maybe half-awake like he usually was. Instead, he was lying down, his arm resting over his eyes, the blanket I had given him draped loosely over his waist. His vest was still on, but his forehead protector had been pushed up, his silver hair falling messily over his face.

I stared for a moment, caught off guard.

He looked... different like this. Relaxed.

Vulnerable.

It was rare to see him without his usual guarded posture, like he had finally let his walls down—if only for a little while.

A part of me wanted to let him sleep, to let him have this moment of peace. But another part—the annoying part—wanted to mess with him.

A smirk tugged at my lips as I leaned forward. "Oi, Hatake."

No reaction.

I poked his arm. Nothing.

Well. That just wouldn't do.

I grinned, took a deep breath, and—

"KAKASHI, WAKE UP!"

In an instant, he shot up, hand reaching for a weapon that wasn't there. His visible eye was wide, alert—until it landed on me.

"...Seriously?"

I grinned. "Good morning."

He sighed, rubbing his temple. "You're the worst."

"You stayed the night," I pointed out. "I'd say that makes you the idiot here."

Kakashi groaned, but there was a hint of amusement in his voice. "Remind me never to do that again."

I laughed, standing up and stretching. "Too late. You've already proven that you care."

He sighed dramatically. "My mistake."

I rolled my eyes, grabbing my jacket. "Come on, let's get something to eat. I'm starving."

Kakashi stood, fixing his forehead protector before following me to the door. "Ramen?"

"Obviously."

We stepped outside, the village still quiet in the early morning hours. As we walked, I glanced at him out of the corner of my eye.
There was still something different about him.

Mayumi tightened her arms around Kakashi's shoulders, resting her chin near his temple

Mayumi tightened her arms around Kakashi's shoulders, resting her chin near his temple. His silver hair tickled her cheek as she smiled, her dark brown locks cascading over both of them like a protective veil.

"You know," she murmured, her voice carrying a playful lilt, "for someone who insists he doesn't like affection, you sure don't seem to mind carrying me."

Kakashi exhaled, shaking his head slightly. "It's either this or listen to you whine about your legs hurting all the way there," he replied dryly, his one visible eye flicking toward her. "Besides, you're lighter than you look."

Mayumi gasped, feigning offense. "Excuse me? Are you calling me weak?"

"Not weak," he corrected. "Just... deceptively small."

She pouted but didn't protest further, instead leaning into him more. His warmth was comforting, steady, just like he always was.

They walked in a comfortable silence for a while, the soft sound of his footsteps mixing with the distant laughter of children playing. Mayumi's gaze drifted to the Hokage Monument in the distance, then down to the villagers passing by. Some of them stole quick glances at the pair, whispering to one another before offering knowing smiles.

"You realize people are staring," she murmured.

Kakashi didn't even flinch. "Let them."

She arched a brow, amused. "You're not worried about rumors?"

"I've learned to stop caring about those."

His tone was light, but there was something in it that made her chest tighten. She knew Kakashi had spent years keeping people at a distance, guarding himself against attachments. The fact that he let her this close, let her in at all, was something she didn't take lightly.

A warm feeling spread through her as she whispered, "I like this."

"What?"

"Being with you like this."

Kakashi didn't respond right away, but she felt the faintest shift in his posture, a subtle relaxation of his shoulders, a quiet acceptance.

"...Me too," he admitted.

Mayumi smiled, hugging him just a little tighter as they continued their stroll through the village, neither of them in a hurry to let go.

I wasn't stupid. I knew what Hikaru had been implying yesterday—what he had seen before I even noticed it myself.

And now, I couldn't help but wonder if Hikaru had been right.

Maybe something had changed between us. Or maybe it always had been there.
