The tale of Mayumi

Two Years Later

The village of Konoha had settled into an era of peace, and with it, life had taken on a somewhat normal rhythm. Well... as normal as it could be when you were engaged to the Hokage and constantly sent on high-stakes spy missions.

Mayumi stretched her arms above her head, taking in the familiar sight of the Hokage's office as she leaned against the doorframe. "Good morning, Lord Hokage," she said teasingly.

Kakashi, buried under a mountain of paperwork, barely looked up. "Good morning, Lady Almost-Hatake."

Mayumi snorted. "Smooth. Very smooth."

"Was that sarcasm?" Kakashi asked, finally looking up at her.

"A little," she admitted with a smirk. "I'm still waiting for the day you remember we're engaged and actually plan a wedding."

Kakashi set his pen down, sighing dramatically. "I haven't forgotten, I've just been... busy governing an entire village."

"And I've been busy sneaking into enemy territory and terrifying criminals," Mayumi said with a shrug. "But somehow, I remember."

"Maybe we should put Shikamaru in charge of planning it," Kakashi mused.

"You just want an excuse to dump more work on him."

"...Maybe."

Mayumi rolled her eyes but grinned. "Speaking of Shikamaru, where is he?"

"With Naruto," Kakashi replied. "Making sure he doesn't overdo it on his first official day as a jōnin."

Mayumi chuckled. "Naruto? Overdo it? No way."

Kakashi gave her a knowing look.

"...Okay, fine. He's probably already exhausted three chūnin just from sheer enthusiasm."

"Exactly."

Just then, the door swung open, and Hikaru strolled in, looking far too pleased with himself. "I come bearing important news."

Kakashi sighed. "If it's another reason why you and Emiko broke up, I don't want to hear it."

"Funny thing," Hikaru said, rubbing his chin. "Neither of us actually remember why we broke up. One day we were dating, then we got into a minor argument, and the next thing I knew, we just... weren't together anymore."

Mayumi squinted at him. "That sounds suspiciously like you two just forgot you were in a relationship."

Hikaru shrugged. "Maybe. Anyway, I have more important things to talk about." He clapped his hands together. "Tonight, we're celebrating your birthday, Mayumi!"

She blinked. "Oh, right... That's today."

Hikaru gaped at her. "Are you serious?"

Kakashi sighed. "It's not just the wedding. She forgets everything when she's deep in mission mode."

"Hey, I don't forget things!" Mayumi protested. "I just... selectively prioritize information."

"Uh-huh," Hikaru said flatly. "Well, too bad, because we already planned something, and you don't get a say in it."

Mayumi narrowed her eyes. "Who's 'we'?"

"The usual suspects—Naruto, Sakura, Shikamaru, Tsunade, Shizune... even Lee, if you can believe it."

Mayumi grinned. "Lee, huh? That means it's about to be chaotic."

Kakashi looked exhausted already.

Hikaru slung an arm over her shoulder. "Come on, birthday girl, let's go make sure Naruto hasn't set something on fire yet."
