The evening had settled over Konoha, the streets quieting as people returned to their homes. Inside the Hokage's office, a different kind of quiet prevailed. Kakashi sat at his desk, papers scattered in front of him as he and Mayumi went over the details of a recent mission she had completed.
Mayumi, sitting across from him, leaned forward slightly, tracing a finger over the mission report. "I think the intel we gathered was solid, but the enemy forces weren't as scattered as we expected. They regrouped quickly, and I had to make sure nothing got out of hand."
Kakashi nodded, his black eyes fixed on her as he listened intently. "You did well, Mayumi. I knew you'd be able to handle it. Let's make sure we send a debrief to the team leaders in the other villages. We can't let this information slip through the cracks."
The conversation was focused, professional, but a soft energy lingered between them. The subtle way their fingers brushed when Mayumi passed a document, the shared glances, and the comfortable silence when there was nothing to say. It was a side of them that few outside of their small circle would recognize, but to those who knew them well, it was clear that something had changed.
As they continued discussing the mission, the door to Kakashi's office suddenly slammed open, causing both of them to jump in surprise. Tsunade stormed in, her usual fierce expression in place. She didn't bother knocking, as she normally would.
"Kakashi!" Tsunade's voice was sharp, carrying her annoyance. "Why didn't anyone inform me that Mayumi was back in the village? I heared rumors all the way in Sand village, and no one thought to tell me?!"
Kakashi stood up, raising an eyebrow as he glanced toward Tsunade. "Tsunade, you said you were going on a vacation and didn't tell anyone where you were going."
Tsunade didn't even acknowledge his comment, her eyes scanning the office for any sign of Mayumi. Her gaze landed on the young woman sitting across from Kakashi, and her posture suddenly stilled. Tsunade blinked, her mouth dropping open for just a second before her sharp eyes darted back to Kakashi.
It took her a moment to process the sight before her—Mayumi sitting so close to Kakashi, their chairs nearly touching, the subtle but unmistakable intimacy between them. Tsunade's expression softened, and her lips curled into a smile as the realization hit her.
"Wait... hold on a second," Tsunade said, her voice suddenly quieter. "You two... You're together!"
Mayumi blinked, caught off guard by the question, and then smiled sheepishly. "Yeah, I guess we are."
Kakashi, ever the cool and composed Hokage, simply gave a small, nonchalant shrug. "About time, right?"
Tsunade's shock quickly turned into an open smile, and she let out a hearty laugh. "Well, I'll be damned. You two finally figured it out." She crossed her arms, her tone shifting to one of amusement. "And here I thought you'd take forever."
Kakashi and Mayumi exchanged a look, both chuckling softly at the unexpected turn of events.
"I wasn't planning on it," Mayumi replied, her voice light. "But things just... fell into place."
Tsunade grinned widely, her hands resting on her hips. "This calls for a celebration, don't you think?"
Mayumi glanced at Kakashi, her heart fluttering at the warmth in Tsunade's smile. "A celebration? But we just had dinner."
"Oh no, no," Tsunade insisted, her voice full of mischief. "This is bigger than dinner. We need a real celebration! I'm dragging you both to the tavern."
Before either of them could protest, Tsunade was already marching toward the door, throwing it open and gesturing for them to follow. "Come on, we'll go get a drink. And don't give me that 'we're busy' nonsense, Kakashi. It's time for some fun."
Mayumi laughed at Tsunade's forceful enthusiasm. "I guess there's no backing out of this, huh?"
Kakashi gave her a wry smile. "It seems that way."
With a resigned sigh, but a smile tugging at the corner of his lips, Kakashi stood up from his desk and followed Tsunade out the door. Mayumi stood up as well, catching up to them.
The evening sky outside was filled with stars as the three of them walked through the village streets, Tsunade leading the way, her steps quick and purposeful. They soon reached the lively tavern, filled with the sounds of laughter and clinking glasses. Tsunade didn't waste any time, dragging them both to a table and ordering a round of drinks before they'd even sat down.
"Well, what are we waiting for?" Tsunade asked, grinning. "We've got a lot of celebrating to do!"
Mayumi and Kakashi shared a look before they both laughed, the weight of the past few weeks finally lifting as the evening unfolded before them.
They weren't alone anymore—not in the world, and certainly not in this moment. They had each other, and with friends like Tsunade around, they knew that whatever came next, they would face it together.

The night went on with stories, laughter, and the warmth of a celebration they hadn't even known they needed.
