The bottle of sake was empty. Then another. Somewhere between the first and second, Hikaru had lost whatever self-control he usually clung to.

I'd seen him drink plenty of times before—mostly because I made him buy alcohol for me since I was underage—but I'd never seen him this drunk. He was completely out of it, his usual calm and serious demeanor replaced by a giggling, clumsy mess. And honestly? I was just as bad.

There weren't many people in the ramen shop, but even if there were, I wouldn't have cared. I never did.

The bell above the door jingled, and a man walked in, settling into a seat near us. Something about him immediately caught my attention. He was shady. A mask covered the lower half of his face, and a headband slanted over one of his eyes.

I nudged Hikaru, barely containing my laughter. "Hey, hey—look at that guy. What's up with him?" I pointed at him, my drunk brain failing to grasp the concept of subtlety.

Hikaru, swaying slightly, squinted at the man. "He probably wants to eat, you idiot," he said with a hiccup, attempting to sound composed but failing miserably.

I gasped dramatically. "Duh, I know that. But how is he gonna eat with that mask on?" I narrowed my eyes, convinced I had just unraveled some great mystery.

Hikaru's mouth dropped open. "Ohhh... yeah. That makes no sense. He'd totally ruin his mask!!" He practically shouted, sending me into another fit of laughter.

Realizing how loud we were being, I slapped a hand over his mouth. "Shhhh." I glanced sideways at the man. He was sitting just two seats away. No one else was talking, so there was no way he hadn't heard us. My stomach flipped slightly, but when I peeked at him, he was just reading a book, completely unfazed.

Hikaru licked my palm, and I yanked my hand away with a disgusted noise.

"You're disgusting," I muttered, wiping my hand on his sleeve.

He ignored me and slammed his empty cup onto the table. "We should make a toast!" He threw an arm around my shoulders, pulling me into his side. "Mayumi, you absolutely crushed it today. That boulder never stood a chance. I'm so proud of you!"

I grinned, raising my cup. "Damn right, I did—"

"I'm sorry," a voice interrupted, smooth and calm. "Did he just say Mayumi?"

Both Hikaru and I froze.

Slowly, we turned toward the masked man. His visible eye was locked onto me, his book now closed on the counter.

"Dude," I whispered. "I think he's onto us."

"Does he seem angry?" Hikaru whispered back. "'Cause I really don't think I can fight right now, Mayumi."

Still holding the man's gaze, I whispered, "I don't know. I can't exactly see his face."

The man let out a heavy sigh, pinched the bridge of his nose, and muttered something under his breath. Then, after a deep inhale, he looked at us again.

"So you really are Mayumi. And I'm assuming you're Hikaru."

Hikaru and I exchanged confused glances.

"Uh... yeah?" I answered hesitantly.

The man nodded. "Well, I guess that saves me the trouble of searching the village for you two." He leaned back slightly, as if getting comfortable. "My name is Kakashi Hatake. I was sent here to find you. By order of Lady Hokage."

I blinked.

Then, still very much drunk, I blurted out:

"I'm sorry, who?"
