The peaceful silence of the rainy afternoon is shattered by a bang on the front door.
Mayumi groans from her cocoon of blankets on the couch. "If that's another traveling peddler trying to sell us garlic-infused sandals, I swear—"
Kakashi doesn't move. "Could be a ninja emergency."
Mayumi narrows her eyes. "Then Naruto can come get us himself. We're off-duty."
Another bang—followed by a muffled, but unmistakably loud voice:
"I KNOW YOU'RE IN THERE! OPEN UP! I'M DRENCHED AND TRAUMATIZED!"
Kakashi sighs. "It's Hikaru."
Mayumi sits up, blanket still wrapped around her like a burrito. "Why is he always so dramatic?"
"You're asking me?"
Kakashi opens the door, and Hikaru bursts in like a wet cat with no dignity.
He's absolutely soaked, hair plastered to his face, eyes wild. "It's a monsoon out there! I didn't know Konoha had weather!"
Mayumi blinks. "It's literally in the Fire nation, Hikaru."
"I slipped in the mud! I got chased by someone's evil goose!" He points accusingly at Kakashi. "This is your fault!"
"My fault?" Kakashi looks utterly unimpressed.
"Your house has the perfect porch roof for hiding under. I got hopeful. I was betrayed."
Mayumi bursts out laughing.
Twenty minutes later, Hikaru is dried off, wrapped in one of Mayumi's pink towels, and sulking on the couch while stealing Kakashi's tea. Mayumi is still giggling.
"I'm glad your trauma brings her joy," Kakashi mutters, not entirely unamused.
"Why are you two like this?" Hikaru asks. "I walk in, and it smells like old books and feelings."
Kakashi lifts an eyebrow. "Should we have lit a scented candle instead?"
Mayumi pokes her head out from the kitchen. "We have one called 'Forest Romance.'"
Hikaru groans. "No. Absolutely not. I'm leaving the moment this storm stops."
"Feel free to stay," Kakashi says dryly. "We'll just keep being in love in the meantime."
Mayumi appears beside him with two mugs of cocoa and kisses his cheek. "He's just jealous. No one's ever brought him cocoa during a thunderstorm."
"I will throw this mug into your face," Hikaru warns.
Kakashi chuckles as Mayumi settles next to him again. The rain keeps falling. Hikaru continues to grumble, but secretly smiles behind his mug.
Peaceful days are rare. Even when they're interrupted.
