The village was quiet in the early morning, the streets still half-asleep as Kakashi and I walked side by side. Last night's events lingered between us—his warmth, his quiet reassurance, the way he stayed without hesitation. I had expected things to feel awkward, but they didn't. Instead, there was an odd sense of comfort, like we had settled into something unspoken.

I glanced at him. He walked with his hands in his pockets, his posture relaxed, but I wasn't fooled. I knew him well enough by now to see when his mind was elsewhere.

"You okay?" I asked, breaking the silence.

He blinked, turning his head slightly toward me. "Hm?"

"You're thinking too hard."

His eye crinkled with amusement. "And here I thought I was good at hiding it."

I smirked. "Not from me."

He hummed in response, but I could tell he wasn't going to elaborate. Typical.

We reached the ramen stand, and I didn't even hesitate. "Morning, old man. Two bowls, extra pork."

Teuchi chuckled, shaking his head as he got to work. "You again? You're going to eat me out of business, girl."

I grinned. "Doubt it. You'd be bankrupt already if that were true."

Kakashi let out a quiet chuckle as he sat beside me, watching as I made myself comfortable.

"So," I said, turning to him. "Are you gonna pretend last night never happened, or are we gonna talk about it?"

Kakashi didn't answer right away. Instead, he reached for his tea. "What part, exactly?"

I rolled my eyes. "You know what part."

He hummed. "The part where you curled up against me like a cat, or the part where you finally admitted you're scared of the dark?"

I kicked him under the counter.

He let out an amused breath but didn't move away.

I exhaled, resting my chin on my hand. "I meant the part where you finally admitted that you thought Hikaru and I were together this entire time."

Kakashi glanced at me, as if debating whether or not to play dumb.

I arched an eyebrow.

He sighed, setting his tea down. "In my defense, you are a little too close for two people who aren't together."

I groaned. "Not this again."

"I'm just saying—"

"You're just wrong."

Kakashi smirked, and I knew he was doing this just to mess with me now.

I turned my body toward him fully. "Hikaru and I have never been together. We never will be together. He's my best friend. My brother."

Kakashi didn't say anything for a moment. Then, finally, he leaned forward slightly, his voice quieter. "I know."

I blinked. "You do?"

He nodded, his expression unreadable. "I just... didn't want to assume. Not when it mattered."

I stared at him, heart skipping a beat at the weight of those words.

Before I could respond, a familiar voice interrupted us.

"Mayumi!"

I turned just as Hikaru strolled up to the stand, looking exhausted but otherwise fine.

"You're back early," I said, surprised.

"Mission was easier than expected." He plopped down on the stool next to me, glancing between me and Kakashi. "What's going on?"

"Oh, nothing," I said, smirking. "Just explaining to our dear friend here that we have never been a couple."

Hikaru groaned, rubbing his temples. "We already went over this."

"I know!" I said dramatically, throwing my hands up.

Kakashi just sipped his tea like nothing was happening.

Hikaru muttered something under his breath before narrowing his eyes at Kakashi. "Wait. Why are you even here together this early in the morning?"

Kakashi shrugged. "Mayumi asked me to stay the night."

Hikaru choked on air.

I snorted. "Not like that, idiot."

Kakashi hummed. "You should be more specific next time."

I kicked him under the counter again.

Hikaru groaned, shaking his head. "I hate both of you."

I just laughed, but deep down, I knew something had changed.
