Jeongin's POV
Did I hear right, or were my ears deceiving me?
Sungmi has cancer, that too at such a tough stage.
How did we never know? This was bad. Really bad.
I knew something was wrong when I saw Minho Hyung. He's a very well experienced doctor as a cancer specialist in this hospital, so obviously this would be the case. I should've guessed it was something related to that.
A whole thirty minutes passed and Minho Hyung still didn't show. What was happening?
When he finally came out, we stood to our feet at once.
"H-Hyeong, what happened? Is she okay? Is she going to be okay?" I asked frantically.
"As I've already said, she has been diagnosed with lung cancer. The tumor has spread far off to the other organs of the body to such an extent that not even surgery would help in such a case."
"Isn't there a way to solve this?" Mr Cho asked, concern heavy in his tone.
"Unfortunately... It's terminal, meaning there's nothing we can do about it."
"But you're a doctor. There has to be something you can do!" Sungmi's mother wasn't having any of it.
"Maybe if the tumor had been identified sooner, then we would have tried chemotherapy and radiotheraputical treatments that are available. But right now... All I can say is that she doesn't have a lot of time left. We've already broken the news to her. For now, what she needs is all your love and support as her close ones. As a doctor, I did what I could up until this point. I'm very sorry..." Minho Hyung looked down at his clipboard in shame and guilt.
Mrs Cho broke down into tears right there. This was their only daughter. Losing her was a fearful nightmare.
I couldn't believe what I was hearing. I was going to lose Sungmi. I was going to lose my best friend to a dreadful disease.

Author's POV
After staying with Sungmi for a bit longer, Jeongin, along with Chan and Seungmin, exited the hospital building.
Jeongin looked sad and lacked even a single hint of a hope on his face. Dread was the only thing that was evident.
This was his best friend after all. She was sick and dying slowly from the inside.
Just as they were a distance away from the car, a strange occurrence took place.
Suddenly, the car exploded, sending a strong blast wave that sent them off their feet. When they fell to the ground, Chan kept on high alert, trying to quickly assess the situation.
"You guys okay?"
"Y-Yeah," Jeongin replied, feeling fazed about this all.
They hurriedly stood up and looked at the aftermath of the explosion.
A black car came to the entrance of the hospital's parking lot. Mrs Yang looked at the distribution that had been caused. She stopped the car and immediately rushed out to her son.
"Jeongin!"
The three males turned their attention towards the voice that called out to Jeongin.
"Eomma?"
"What happened here? Are you alright?" Chaerin asked worriedly.
"I'm fine, but what are you doing here?"
"I came to see Sungmi... I think we should go home, right now." She glanced at the two males that stood next to him.
Jeongin looked up at Chan. He gave his hand a reaffirmed squeeze before parting ways.
A few moments later, the fire brigade arrived along with the city police.

*08:30 p.m.*
"I have no idea what's going on. I haven't seen that look in her eyes in a long time. It reminds me of the time I got kidnapped. It was like her world had just ended for a moment..."
Chan nodded in understanding.
"I could see how she was suffering. She looked so tired. She'd been having this illness for such a long time and we never knew. And we can't even do anything about it."
Sniffling sounds along with silent sobs could be heard over the phone.
"I get it. It's hard to see her go through this pain. But we just have to give her our love and support, just as Minho had said. The rest will follow..."
Jeongin couldn't really be seen properly through the screen, but it seemed he was crying.
"I'm just wondering what she's feeling right now. She's practically a sister to me. I don't want her to leave me yet." More sobbing could be heard.
"You need to stay strong. If you become weak, then how is she supposed to cope with it if you can't comfort her?" Chan tried to console him. "People come and go, what really matters is the moments you spend with them. We never expected this, but just be glad that you were able to spend happy times with her. Wounds heal with time. This one shall heal too at some point. It'll be alright..."
Jeongin's sobbing quieted down at some point. It was hard to keep yourself composed when your best friend was on her deathbed – literally.
"Have you eaten?" Chan asked after a while.
"I'm not hungry," Jeongin replied very bluntly.
"Why not?"
"I'm just not hungry."
"You should eat, otherwise stress might just eat me up. Is this how you do things when I'm not with you?"
"... No. Of course not."
"Jeongin, you have to eat. I don't like it when you skip meals. Promise me you'll eat something soon."
"Okay, Channie. I promise." Jeongin sounded convincing enough.
"Why are the lights in your room so dim?"
"I don't know either. I just got into the room and found it like this. So I decided to stick with it."
"But you don't like the dark, remember?"
"Yeah, but this isn't exactly dark. It's just... different. Comforting, maybe?"
"But I can hardly see your face."
"Well, I can see you. Isn't that enough?"
Chan pouted. "I wanna see your pretty face."
Jeongin sighed, "Fine. Give me a second."
He reached out to the lamp on the nightstand and switched it on.
"Much better," Chan smiled.
Jeongin's face looked puffy and tired. He really was tired of all the crying he's been doing.
"I miss you," Jeongin said with a sad expression."
"I miss you more, my love," Chan replied wholeheartedly.
___
"The job was done well."
"But I didn't manage to kill him, ma'am."
"It's fine. It's perfectly fine. What you did was enough. You'll get your payment in an hour, so you can leave."
The middle aged man bowed before leaving the room
"I don't really care about killing Kim Seungmin. I've got bigger fish to fry."
Hye-ri leaned back into the comfort chair that was in the spacious office of her late younger brother.
"Get ready, Bang Chan. The show's just beginning..."
