Chapter – The Unspoken Cracks
The city felt quieter than usual that night — or maybe it was just Nayoung.
She sat curled up on Taehyung's couch, knees hugged to her chest, hair falling messily over her face. She'd been there for over an hour now, not saying much except for the occasional "I'm fine" that even a stranger could tell was a lie.
Taehyung had given her space at first — made her tea, left it on the coffee table, and sat in the armchair opposite her. He didn't want to push. But when he noticed her fingers twisting the hem of her sweater over and over, he leaned forward.
"Nayoung-ah..."
His voice was low, careful. "You've been staring at that same spot on the carpet for twenty minutes. What's going on?"
Nayoung's throat tightened. She hated crying in front of people — even Taehyung. But the way he was looking at her now, like she was allowed to not be okay, made the words start tumbling out before she could stop them.
"We fought."
The two words sounded small, but the weight behind them was heavy.
Taehyung frowned.
"You and Hayoung?"
She nodded, swallowing hard.
"A week ago. And we... haven't talked since."
She took a shaky breath, hands tightening around her knees.
"It wasn't like the small arguments we've had before. We usually just... make up after an hour. But this time—" she exhaled sharply, "—this time it felt like she wasn't even listening to me. Like I wasn't her best friend anymore."
Taehyung leaned back slightly, trying to process. He'd seen them together before — Hayoung and Nayoung weren't just close, they were inseparable. The kind of friends who knew each other's passwords, moods, and secrets without asking.
"What was the fight about?" he asked carefully.
Nayoung bit her lip. She didn't want to sound like she was gossiping or being petty — but she also couldn't keep it in anymore.
"It's... her boss. Rohan."
Taehyung's eyebrows lifted slightly.
"The one from India?"
She nodded again, her jaw tightening.
"I don't like the way he looks at her. The way he talks to her. I can't explain it — but it's there. And every time I try to warn her, she shuts me down. Says I'm overreacting."
She let out a humorless laugh.
"Overreacting. That's what she called it, right before she walked out of my apartment."
Taehyung could see the hurt in her eyes — not just from the fight, but from the deeper wound of feeling like she was being pushed out of Hayoung's life. He didn't know enough about Rohan yet to form a full judgment, but he trusted Nayoung's instincts more than most people's.
He got up from the armchair and sat down beside her on the couch.
"Hey," he said gently. "You've been her friend for what — more than a decade? If you feel something's off, it's not nothing."
Nayoung blinked rapidly, trying not to cry again.
"Then why won't she believe me?"
Taehyung's tone softened even more.
"Because sometimes the people we care about... don't want to believe something that could hurt them. It doesn't mean she doesn't trust you — it just means she's not ready to see it yet."
Her lips trembled.
"But what if by the time she sees it, it's too late?"
He didn't answer right away — because deep down, he had the same fear.
Instead, he reached for her tea, now lukewarm, and pressed the mug into her hands.
"We'll figure it out," he promised. "Together."
For the first time that night, her shoulders loosened slightly.
She still felt broken — but not entirely alone.
Across the city, Hayoung was standing at Jungkook's kitchen counter, slowly picking apart a slice of cake with her fork. She hadn't planned on telling him about the fight — not tonight, when she had finally gotten a break from her busy schedule and just wanted to relax with him.
But Jungkook had a way of reading her silences.
"You've been quieter than usual," he said, leaning on the counter across from her. "And you're attacking that cake like it insulted you."
She rolled her eyes lightly, but her smile was weak.
"I'm fine."
He raised an eyebrow.
"No, you're not."
She sighed, finally setting down the fork.
"I fought with Nayoung."
Jungkook tilted his head slightly.
"Again?"
"Not like before," she admitted. "This time... it's bad. We haven't talked in a week."
Jungkook's expression softened.
"Do you want to tell me what happened?"
She hesitated, knowing exactly how it would sound.
"She keeps bringing up Rohan. Saying she doesn't trust him, that he's not... good for me. And I just—" she shook her head, frustrated, "—I've worked with him for years. He's helped me so much in my career. He's never done anything wrong. But she makes it sound like he's some kind of... danger."
Jungkook's gaze flickered briefly — he didn't know Rohan personally, but the way Hayoung described him now made something twist in his gut. Still, he could see how upset she was, and this wasn't the moment to push.
"And you think she's wrong?" he asked gently.
"I think she's letting her instincts override logic," Hayoung replied quickly. "She's my best friend. She should know me better than anyone — and she should know I can take care of myself."
Her voice cracked slightly at the end, betraying the fact that the fight wasn't just about Rohan. It was about feeling misunderstood.
Jungkook stepped around the counter and came to stand in front of her. He rested his hands lightly on her arms.
"Hey. I'm not going to tell you who's right or wrong right now. But I know Nayoung cares about you — and I know you care about her. This fight... it's not forever."
She met his eyes, searching for certainty.
"How do you know?"
He gave her a small smile.
"Because I've seen the way you two are. People like that don't just walk away from each other over one fight."
Hayoung's shoulders dropped slightly, the tension easing just a fraction. She hated that he was right — and yet, part of her still felt too stubborn to reach out first.
Jungkook pulled her into his arms, resting his chin on top of her head.
"Whatever happens, you've got me, okay?"
For the first time that night, she let herself relax into him.
They stayed like that for a while, the hum of the refrigerator filling the silence. Both of them thinking about Nayoung — and, quietly, about the man who had somehow become the center of this growing divide.
Meanwhile, Taehyung was still sitting beside Nayoung, watching her stare into her tea. She was quieter now, but he could tell her mind was still racing.
"You don't have to do this alone," he said again, his tone firmer this time. "If something's off about him, I'll help you figure it out. No matter what Hayoung thinks right now."
Nayoung's eyes softened at that — a small spark of relief breaking through the heaviness.
"Thank you," she murmured.
And for the first time that week, she felt like she could breathe again.
