It started with something small. In fact it was something so small, it didn't even matter to Michael. So when Liz came home and started slamming cupboard doors and muttering curses under her breath, it was safe to say he was beyond confused.
"I said I was sorry, hon. My meeting finished late and Whole Foods was closed. We'll get take out tonight and go grocery shopping tomorrow." Michael explained gently.
"Sorry doesn't fix the fact we have no fucking food in the house." Liz spun around to face him, back to the fridge that wasn't nearly as empty as she was making it out to be.
"Come on, Liz. We've got food. No, it's not quite the organic, top range stuff you're used to, but it'll do. It's not like we're gonna starve." Michael chuckled, trying to lighten the mood.
There was a pause, tension building further between them. Michael was expecting Liz to laugh, apologise for being a drama queen, and then hug him. What he wasn't expecting was:
"Fuck you!" She yelled sharply, staring right at him, his words having added fuel to her fire.
"Liz-!" He was interrupted, but he didn't have the slightest idea what to say anyway.
"You think this is funny? You're such a dickhead, Michael. What the hell's wrong with you? You couldn't have found another grocery store?" Liz ranted, clearly not appreciating Michael's futile joking tone.
"I don't think that's fair, babe. Yes, I missed Whole Foods opening times because my meeting ran over but I've told you I'll get take out tonight. I think you're being a bit dramatic now." Michael said a little more seriously.
"What?! Michael, this is why you're in your forties and you've never had a serious relationship!" Liz snapped.
"Come on, that's unnecessary now. You're blowing this way out of proportion." Michael sighed.
"No I'm not! I'm telling you the truth! I'm doing you a favour. In fact, I've done you multiple favours." Liz said suggestively. "I don't remember being on the receiving end of any!"
"You need to calm yourself down, Liz." Michael shook his head in disbelief at everything she was choosing to bring up.
"And you need to learn to be a better boyfriend before I dump your sorry ass for being such a useless piece of shit." Liz yelled, starting to completely unravel.
"Okay, enough." Michael's deep voice cut through her shrill screaming and everything stood still. "I've let you use me as your verbal punching bag for long enough now because I thought you'd start to learn from it. Clearly not. It's just me getting hurt now, and I'm not going to let you keep talking to me like this."
For a moment, for a brief moment, there was silence. Liz glared at him, eyes dark with anger, before she was boiling over again, unable to hold back anymore.
"For fucks sake, Michael! It's just words!" She yelled, throwing her hands up in the air.
"That's your problem, Liz." Michael rubbed his forehead, the unrelenting volume of her voice starting to make his head throb. "You throw words out like they don't cut deep. I thought it was childish and immature, to begin with. I thought maybe you were testing your limits. But you're just being a bitch."
The glass in her hand hurled at the wall. It smashed instantly and the shards landed on the floor just inches from Michael's feet. He looked up at her only to see her completely seething with rage.
"You can shut the fuck up." She spat the words like venom, staring him down.
"Liz, I don't know what is going on right now but it needs to stop." He said, stepping around the glass on the floor and towards the kitchen island which she stood behind.
