"Love." Cory Matthews, Maya and Riley's 11th grade teacher began lecturing as he looked at the invested kids. "What is the first thing that comes to mind?" He asked the class, beginning to pace around a bit as he waited for some curious hands to raise up.
Riley raised her hand with a sincere smile. "An emotional roller coaster. Craziness fills the situation." She answered, confident and filled with pride. Cory raised his eyebrows in slight awe.
"That's what comes to your mind?" He asked, clasping his hands together as he looked at his 16 year old daughter. Maya was doodling on her notebook as she was half paying attention to her best friend's teacher's lecture. Cory's eyes traveled from Riley's cheery face to Maya's sensitive plain face as her eyes were set on he notebook.
"What about you, Maya?" He asked. "What's the first word that comes to your mind when you here the world love?"
"Blegh!" She mocked the word, with a gross noise. This made the class and Matthews chuckle, but he quickly waved it off.
"Seriously Maya, what is the first word?" He asked once more. Maya set down her pen, looking up at her teacher with an expressionless face.
"Heartbreak." She spoke, her heart twisting in a knot from the inside of her chest. Cory didn't say a word, he looked at the girl, trying to read her.
"Heartbreak." He repeated out loud. "And how come?"
She took a breath, and rolled the sleeves of her black top down to her hands. "Sometimes when you love something and you wish and pine for it to work out, it ends up to be the opposite of what you want."
Cory raised his brows, now seeming invested of what Maya's perspective of love was.
"What would you want, if you loved the person?" He replied to her answer with another question, curious to the girl who had a screwed up family. Maya looked at him with her bright blue innocent eyes like she had the answer right on her lips, but with her movements, she shrugged, pretending she had no clue. Lucas looked up from the back of her, also curious about the girl too. Riley, Maya, and Lucas had all known each other since the 7th grade, and have been exploring every adventure together.
They've all become stronger people, also. With Maya's family problems, and as Riley began discovering herself, they really began to grow up a lot more. Lucas and Farkle had followed them every step of the way since then.
Lucas raised his hand, hopeful to the correct answer. "A never ending roller coaster." He said. Cory breathed out slowly, making it sound like a sigh.
"These are all good answers." Cory began, looking at each of them. "But unfortunately, they are wrong."
"Excuse me Mr. Matthews but from scientific fact, love is a feeling produced by two people who care and are crazy about each other." Farkle said.
"You may be right, but love," Cory looked down. "Not even science can give the correct answer." He walked around the class calmly. "Love, how adults see it, means that the one person   that makes you cry, laugh, smile, is your everything. You look at them, and they are your everything."
"Wow." Riley looked into space dreamily, making Maya chuckle as she began to look up from her doodle. Maya looked back at her paper, revealing it to be a heart, with many designs and feelings inside of it. Though they almost looked like doodles, it meant so much more to the girl than anyone could understand.
She was in love with someone. She just knew it. It was stuck in her eyes, and her movement always changed when he was in the room. Her words came out with a stutter, and her cheeks mostly remained pink when he talked to her. Her heart beat increased whenever he would smile at her, or look at her, touch her even.
Maya was hopelessly in love, and it was a feeling she for sure was not used to.
~~
She took the subway home, trying to pay attention to what Riley was going on about. Maya smiled at her best friend as she talked continuously the whole ride. Her mind wasn't fixed much on it though, it was fixed on a certain boy.
"Earth to Maya?" Riley teased as Maya popped out of her trance.
"Oh-sorry. I was just-"
"Thinking about something else? What were you thinking about anyway?" Riley chuckled. Maya's cheeks turned pink and looked down, her blonde hair slightly brushing over her cheeks.
"Maya? You okay?" Riley asked. Maya nodded, not wanting to let Riley see the blush that stuck on her face. "Hmm, I'm trying add up the symptoms of my best friend right now." She giggled. "Hiding her face, distracted, slight mood changes," Maya's head remained down. Riley thought about it, but soon enough came to a realization. "Oh my god." Riley gasped. "You like someone!"
Maya rolled her eyes, and looked up at her friend. Riley looked at her as if reading her and smiled wider. "You really like someone. Who's the mystery boy?" Maya kept quiet, not wanting to reveal anything. She looked at her friend, not smiling, keeping the silence still and her tension under the radar.
~~
Maya turned the key and opened her door to her apartment, sighing before walking in the what she thought was the empty house she's been living in. Her mom began working late, but still was close to her and called her often. Maya set the keys down on the counter and she went to get a glass of water. All of a sudden, the girl heard a noise in her living room and paused. Was someone in her house? She thought, and bit her lip nervously. Maya slowly walked out of the kitchen, and tiptoed into the living room.
What she saw, scared her more than a ghost. More than a burglar and even more than a murderer. She saw her father. Mr. Hart, sitting on the couch, his eyes traveling from the ground to her, therefore sucking in a breath. "Maya." He spoke.
"What the hell are you doing here?" She screamed as a tear fell from her eyes and rolled down her cheek.
"I know I should've called, I know I should've been being the father I had to be. I know you're mad-"
"You have no idea how much you've screwed up." Maya yelled as her brows furrowed. She was practically sobbing at this point as she threw her glass of water on the ground, the pieces shattering instantly. "That, is how my heart has been feeling ever since you left."
"Just let me talk to you." Her father pleaded as a tear rolled down his cheek.
"The nerve you have coming here." Maya growled, shaking her head.
~
Lucas decided to walk over to her house, considering the fact that they had to study for their history assignment that's in two days. His heart beat increased as he walked to the girl's house, feeling the butterflies swarming around in his stomach.
He slowly walked up the stairs of the girl's house, biting his lip nervously on the way. He took one look at the door before knocking on it with his slightly trembling hand.
He waited for an answer.
And there was nothing.
It was quiet for a moment, not a sound to be heard. But then it got really loud, like when sometimes in a horror movie there's a suspenseful scene, leading up to a climaxing part.
Lucas flinched at the loud yelling and noises, and he then rang the doorbell as his heart beat grew rapid. There still was no answer, so he grabbed the nob and turned it, watching it fling open in a matter of seconds. He ran inside, scared of what could be happening to the poor girl. She saw her crying and screaming at a man inside her house trying to grab her arm. "HEY!" He yelled, yanking the man's arm off the girl he loved the most. She wrapped her arms tightly around Lucas, her tears falling onto the crook of his neck. "You need to leave, now." He spoke, caressing the girls neck. The man furrowed his brows together, looked at Maya, and then walked out in silence.
She hung on to Lucas tightly, her face staying buried in the crook of his neck. Maya knew she shouldn't of done this, but she softly kissed the crook of his neck as she kept her head there, obviously sending shivers down Lucas's spine. She needed him more than ever now.
---
"Did he do anything to hurt you?" Riley asked, holding Maya's hand tightly. They were sitting at their spot in Riley's room once again, and Maya looked down.
"Riley, if you hold my hand any tighter, it'll snap off." Maya tried joking. Riley loosened her grip, and looked at her best friend.
"I'm sorry this happened to you." Riley sighed. "After all he put you through. The nerve he had to come see you."
"Yeah." Maya nodded. "Thank god he came when he did." She muttered under her breath.
"Who?" Riley asked, her mouth agape.
"Lucas." She told her friend as her cheeks went pink unintentionally. Riley looked at her, I mean really looked at her, and her eyes brightened up a bit.
"You..." She cracked a smile. "You like him."
"What? No way!" Maya yelled as her face grew into a darker pink.
"You're blushing Maya! You like Lucas!" Riley looked at her in amazement as if she won an award. Maya rolled her eyes, but her eyes sparkled as she bit her lip slightly. Riley's face grew serious as she looked at her friend. "You really, really like Lucas."
Maya looked down, and then looked back up, tears swimming in her eyes. "I need him." Her voice cracked as a tear glided down her cheek. Riley gave her a sympathetic smile, pulling her into a hug.
"It will be okay, love you Maya."
----
Later that night, Maya walked out of her house once again, putting her black leather jacket on during the way. The wind braided her hair as she walked down the street, her eyes and mind concentrated on going to Lucas's. Her black combat boots made a scraping sound across the sidewalk as she continued walking, her hair being pulled back by the wind.
She walked up the steps of his house, and as she raised her hand to knock on his door, she paused. What if he was sleeping? What if she was too foolish? What if-
The next thing she knew, her hand knocked on the door, almost scaring herself as Maya jumped back, a shiver going down her spine. A minute later, she began turning around, thinking that he probably had fallen asleep. As she walked down the first step, Maya heard a door open. Her eyes traveled from the steps to Lucas's tired face. His blue eyes gleamed as the moon's reflection remained in them, and his lips were pink and definitely looked smooth. Maya looked down at his lips, and he did the same to her.
"Huckl-Lucas, I..." She hesitated, her voice almost a whisper. He looked at her, and observed her features also. The way the wind swirled her blonde curls around, the vulnerable expression painted on her face, and the way her mouth stayed slightly parted. It intrigued him, but made him love her more each second passing the night. Lucas took a breath, and pulled her close by her waist unexpectedly. "I," she stuttered once more as he looked down at her lips. She looked into his eyes, her eyes sparkling, whispering to Lucas's that they were in love. "I love you." Lucas slowly leaned in and kissed her softly, his hand going to her chin as his other remained around her waist. Maya's arms immediately went around him, keeping her eyes closed as her hungry lips roamed his soft ones. The two pulled apart, and Maya leaned into him, keeping her arms wrapped around his back eventually. "Please don't hurt me." She whispered as his fingers tangled into her blond hair.
"Never." He whispered back, holding her just as she needed him to hold her. "I love you too."

The next day
-------
Mr. Hart lied on his couch, lazily watching tv and drinking his morning coffee. His morning was pretty average just like every other day, until today.
He heard a knock on his door, so he walked over to answer it. He opened it, revealing to be Maya and Lucas, with their hands entwined.
"I'll let you talk to me." Maya said. "But he has to be here with me." She rubbed their hands, and Lucas nodded. They needed to do this together.
This ending definitely created new beginnings.
