Previously..
It was a huge room. And a huge pool filling the scenery. Maya's eyes widen as she looks at Lucas, who is currently mirroring her. Riley smiles, but then smiles mischievously. Farkle worriedly stares at her.
"They don't call it Senioritis for nothin'." Riley's eyes remain on the beautiful blue pool in front of all them. Maya raises her brows at her friend, impressed at her words.
"Wow.. I'm very impressed, Sunshine."
And two seconds later, Riley surprisingly jumps into the water, the water leaking through her top and shorts. Maya shrugs at the two stunned boys, and jumps into the water. Lucas glances over at Farkle, incredulous as he watches his friend jump into the pool after taking off his top. Riley's face burned red as Maya nudged her. Farkle was built.
Everyone is currently in the pool but Lucas. He sits at the edge, too stubborn to go in. Maya notices his refusal and crosses her arms over her soaked top. "Lucas." She calls out. Farkle and Riley gesture him to come in, but he shakes his head.
"This is during school guys! We'd get in major trouble."
"Lucas, this is our senior year. The year to do reckless things and not have a care in the world. Even Riley the goodie two shoes is in the pool." Maya smirks at Riley who is being tickled by Farkle, both of them trying to pull each other under the water. His arms are on her waist, attempting to pull her under before she can take a second breath. "Come on, my ranger Rick. You don't always have to be good." Maya says over the giggles of her friends from behind her. Lucas sighs, looking at the clock. It was mid 6th period-their lunch time. He looks back at his girlfriend of one year, standing up the next moment and taking off his shirt-only wearing a tank top but exposing his toned arms. He quickly jumped in, soaking his pants but not caring. Maya laughed as she brings him closer to her, caressing his now wet blonde hair. Leaning in, he plants a kiss on her warm lips, holding her neck softly. Their moment was soon interrupted by both of them getting splashed. Farkle and Riley were snickering at the couple as Maya frowned at them. Lucas looked down beneath the water and noticed that their hands were entwined under the water. His lips form a smirk as Riley questionably glances at him. The two friends notice their hands and pull away as soon as possible, both their faces red as Farkle begins swimming laps to hide his blush. Maya laughs at them and leans into Lucas.
----
Fast forward the remote to the end of the year, and Maya is currently in the hall, adjusting her cap to her head as she looks at her reflection in the mirror of her locker. It was a Wednesday evening, and her stomach is filled with anxiousness. Riley pops up from behind her, poking the girl's shoulder and causes her to flinch. "Christ, Riles. You almost scared me to death."
Riley shrugs, and smiles with her red lipstick, twirling herself with the red graduation gown she's wearing. "I can't believe we're doing this." She cried, taking a heavy breath. Maya nodded, closing her eyes. They were so much older now, older than this morning, older than the ten seconds that had just passed by. And the reader reading this very sentence, 5 seconds. Maya had gotten a little taller throughout her middle and high school years, and her hair was long up until junior year, where she cut it 6 inches and donated to a foundation. Riley's brown wavy locks had gotten longer, and she began wearing more makeup, but light and pink. Red was an exception on a day like this, though. The boys had gotten taller and discovered that thing called a, "gym." And were definitely built. Speaking of them, Lucas and Farkle walk down the halls of John Quincy Adams High, wearing their red gowns and red caps. Maya turns around, her hair softly flying over her shoulder as a smile appeared on her face. "Hi." She greeted.
Lucas's blue eyes lighten and takes her hand in his. "Hi."
"No huckleberry comment?" Farkle asks, looking at her strangely. She chuckles at her friend.
"He'll always be Huckleberry. But right now, it's just, hi." Maya's eyes travel from Farkle's to her boyfriend's once more.
"Farkle?" Riley blurts out as Maya notices the hesitation. Farkle tilts his head.
"Riley?"
"I have to tell you something." She walks with Farkle to a locker or two away from Maya and Lucas. She stays silent and avoids his glance as the words struggle to come out.
"Riley, are you alright?" Farkle asks, putting a hand on her shoulder. She looks at the boy directly in the eye, cups his cheeks and kisses him, causing Farkle to almost tumble over. Instead of pulling away, he holds her waist and pulls her closer.
"Oh I knew it." Maya snickers, nudging her boyfriend who was in shock.
"He actually did it. Damn."
~
It's time for graduation. It's the same beautiful Wednesday, and tears surround the whole day and the whole school. Everyone is sitting on the stage in front of family and friends who've been watching the whole ceremony so far. Cory Matthews walks back onto the stage, a mic in his hand. He takes a breath, and speaks.
"Wow. It's been a long time since I've really been on this stage." He begins. Maya holds Lucas's hand nervously, as Riley does the same to Farkle. "And knowing that you guys know everything, and the secret of life," he smiles at Riley and Maya. "It's beautiful. If I could start the year 2017 all over again, that first day of September, I would. There's nothing I wouldn't give to teach my daughter and the rest of this class, one more time."
Riley blushes and tears fill her eyes as she leans on her best friend. "We have a special student who wants to give a speech of the class of 2018. Maya Hart?" He calls out. Maya's face burns but stands up, and walks to the podium, feeling every single eye on her.
"My experience over the years in John Quincy Adams Middle and High were the best years of my life." She begins. "I've met the best people, and I learned so many things I didn't know before about life. I wasn't the best at school, due to the tons of lost homework that Mr. Matthews probably won't be able to find." Giggles are heard from the crowd, but Maya is overall serious. "But one thing I learned is that, no matter how tough a situation can be, and you feel you're on the verge of running from it, don't." The room is silent. "Don't run from things. They won't go away if you don't confront the things you fear the most."
She looks down at the top of the podium, avoiding all the eyes. "My fear? My fear was graduating this place. The fear of not learning enough." Maya bravely looks up and faces all the now moved people. "But as I stand here now, I realize that I'm confronting the thing I fear most. Here's to the class of 2018." Maya smiles and holds her cap over her head. Applause is heard and after a couple of moments, they are graduated.
----
It is now 2019 and things have really changed. Maya and Lucas grew more of a serious relationship, and Farkle and Riley's began blooming more. It is now a Thursday of her first week in college. She's resting in her dorm and facetiming Riley.
"So, how's Colombia university treating you?" Maya smiles as she looks at a virtual Riley in front of her.
"It's been great! I've loved it so much." Her friend replies, a little too happy. Maya, knowing her friend very well, smirks at her.
"Flip your camera, Riles."
"But Maya--"
"Dooo it." She demands, her smirk growing by the second. Riley pouted, took a breath and switched the cameras to a distracted studying Farkle. "And I thought boys weren't allowed in the dorms." Maya shakes her head. Riley turns the camera back around and frowns at her friend.
"That's only when it's getting late. He'll be going back to his dorm soon, mom." She rolls her eyes. Maya could hear Farkle saying hi in the background.
"Hi Farkle." Maya greets, ignoring Riley's comment.
"How's Lucas?" Riley asks, tapping her pen to her cheek. Maya shrugs.
"We haven't talked much since I came here and got settled." Maya lays on her stomach, enjoying the softness of her blue sheets. "I hope he calls soon." She bites her lip in slight disappointment. Riley looks at her with a mixture of intrigue and amazement.
"Something looks different on you. You look like, more relaxed." Riley smiles. Maya shakes her head in denial.
"No way. My eyes have only seen homework these days and I've been so busy."
"No.. Like your appearance." Her friend tilts her head, thinking. But seconds later, she gasps and her eyes widen. "Maya-"
"I don't wanna talk about it! Someone is in your room as well." Riley looks back at Farkle, who meets her eye. Seconds later, he frowns, and stands up. She smiles and kisses his cheek before he walks out. A few moments after, she sits back down.
"Okay. Tell me everything." Riley says, needing to know every detail of Maya's time with Lucas. Maya stares at her hesitantly, but sighs.
"Okay." And then 18 year old Maya began to tell her the story.
------
It's a Friday that same week and she's at the food bar of her cafeteria area. Maya's yawning every other second because of the lack of sleep she had gotten from the night before. She asks for a cup of coffee to keep her from falling asleep and drooling on the bar itself. As she feels her eyes drooping down in drowsiness, a tap is felt on her shoulder. Maya raises an eyebrow up as she slowly turns around. A smiling face, dirty blonde hair and blue innocent eyes catches her immediate attention.
"Hey you." Maya greets, pulling his face toward hers as she gives him a passionate hello through a kiss. They pull away, and he leans his forehead against hers.
"Hi." He responds back, holding her hands. She wanted to ask why he didn't call as often since they parted ways to settle into their colleges. But, he read her mind as usual. "I'm sorry I didn't call. College is seriously different from high school." The minor disappointment Maya feels in her chest begins clearing up, and as an outcome, a smile appears on her face.
"I know how you feel." She nods her head. "We're not really teenagers anymore." Lucas nods, caressing her cheek.
"Nope." He replies. "Times going really fast with you and I." A smile is continuously tugging at her lips as her hands run over the side of his hair.
"Lucas, I have to tell you something." Maya feels her heart drum faster as she struggles to get the words out. "I.." He plants another kiss on her lips.
"Love you."
"And I love you." Lucas smiles as well. "But this isn't the first time I heard you say that." Maya's brows furrow and she tilts her head to the side.
"What do you mean?"
"Do you remember that next week from graduation? It was an after party?"
Maya nods her head slowly. "I think so. I think someone spiked the punch as well."
"Yeah. Well, it was late, and you and I were on top of that cruise boat-thing. I can't even remember. But anyway, we were on top drinking what we thought was punch, and you kind of just looked at me, and murmured I love you." He chuckles, caressing her arm. "I could tell you were so exhausted and out of it. I think it was three in the morning."
"Dammit. I still initiated it and I can't even remember it well." Maya pouts, resting her chin on her palm. She sips her cup of coffee and yawns.
"Stuns your growth, I've heard." He smiles as he teases her. She softly glares and punches his arm lightly.
"You're lucky I love you."
---
"Will you marry me?"
It's been two years since Maya has entered college, and she as usual, continues to talk to Riley every day. Once in a while, she sends paragraph filled emails to Farkle, and snapchats herself making fun of cowboy stuff to Zay. She's 21 now, and her college life is a year from over.
But on this particular Friday night, Maya is not answering her phone.
On this particular night, she ran from a ring. She ran from a boy who is becoming a man. On this night, she's out of breath and hiding herself away at the school pool in which she ended up meeting with her old friend Missy; who actually became a better person starting from their freshmen year of college.
"Maya, you ran away from him. You didn't even give him an answer. Are you insane?" Missy scolds her as Maya paces around the pool room.
"Missy I don't know what to do. I wasn't thinking. I'm still barely thinking." Maya is rambling until the end of time, and Missy is trying to hang onto every word.
"Do you love him? Do you love Lucas Friar?"
She stares at her worriedly. "Of course I love him." A tear rolls down her cheek.
"Then what's the problem?"
Maya sits down at the edge of the pool, resting her bare feet inside. She doesn't even know where her shoes went. Missy sits down besides her, rubbing her shoulder.
"What if he runs from me? What if I'm too much of a complication? That's what I used to deal with in my life. Sometimes, people leave." Maya is incredulous at the moment, and waking up tomorrow is seriously going to suck with the lack of sleep she has gotten.
"Has he ever left you?"
Maya glances back at her. "What?"
"Has Lucas Friar ever given up on you on anything? Has he ever said that this was the last time?" Missy asks, waving her hands out to emphasize.
Maya is silent for a while, and all she could do is be still as more tears rolled down. "No. He's never left me."
"Then what are you afraid of?" Missy says, almost laughing. "Maya, you love him and he loves you. He just proposed to you tonight."
She gulps uncomfortably. "I just, I don't wanna be hurt. I don't wanna make a mistake."
Missy raises her brows. "Do you think marrying him would be a mistake?"
She shakes her head. "Deep down, no. But I don't wanna break up for a stupid reason."
"And this would be one of them. So find him. Find him before he thinks the worst." Missy informs, nodding her head. Maya smiles, and hugs her.
"Thank you." She pulls away, and stands up. "I'm going to find him."
~
Later that Friday, Maya is running to where they were when Lucas first proposed. Her hair is starting to get damp from the drizzle that begins the dark night and her heart is pounding out of her chest. "Lucas!" She screams out, trying to find him. Maya loves him, she knows this now. She wants to spend her life with Lucas Friar.
Lucas approaches Maya's dorm and knocks on her door. "Maya, are you in there? I'm sorry.. Can you just talk to me?"
She's searching the parking lot of her campus; her breathing unsteady and rushed. It's freezing due to the cold rain drops that fall on to her skin. Maya rushed to the dorm area of her college.
Lucas sighs. "I'm sorry. If you don't want to marry me, then I won't pressure you. But I do love you, Maya. Just know that."
Maya stumbles into the dorm area, her blonde curls soaked. She runs down the hallway in her sneakers, getting to her dorm so she can call Lucas.
She runs down the hallway.
He walks down the hallway to the exit.
Maya is approaching her dorm room,
Lucas begins turning a corner.
Maya stumbles upon him unintentionally.
They bonk heads.
Maya sucks in a breath as she looks at him. He's about to talk, when she suddenly grabs his cheeks and pulls him toward her, kissing him passionately. "Yes." She mumbles against his lips. "Yes."
They pull apart, and Lucas is still holding her in his arms with a stupid smile on his face. "I'll marry you." Her eyes lighten as the sentence travels out of her mouth. Lucas pulls her closer, and kisses her forehead. She looks down and notices that he's slipping a ring on her finger. A blush flashes her face and examines it's perpetual beauty.
---
They hold hands walking into Riley's house, for Maya, Lucas, Farkle and Riley are on their college breaks. It is a Saturday morning and they're bored.
The couple doesn't say anything about their proposal; because the two are slick assholes who enjoy to have their friends just find out on their own. Maya kisses Lucas's cheek as they sit down on Riley's couch, Maya casually crossing her legs.
"I haven't seen you guys in so long." She claps her hands together happily. Maya smiles at her peaceful best friend. "This is perfect!"
"Yeah. And so are you." Farkle smiles as he kisses her temple. Maya and Lucas pretend to gag.
"Gross." She pretended to shiver over-dramatically. Lucas rubbed his thumb against hers. They were ones to talk.
"So. Speaking of gross, how is your little official thing going?" Maya sat up, yawning. Riley blushes and frowns at them.
"That's a random question to ask.. Maya. It's almost as if we were still in high school. You would ask something like that. As if you know the answer, or if you have better news." Maya makes a bewildered expression, but Riley smiles. "What is it?"
"Best friend telepathy is creepy." Farkle says, backing away from the two.
Maya's lips were sealed. She shrugs as she glances at her secret fiancé, shooting him a smirk as her blonde curls whip to one side. Lucas tries his best to be a normal person as they sit down.
"Come on Maya. What is it?" Riley asks once more, clasping their hands together as she smiles mischievously. "I know you like the silent secret game."
"I don't know what you're talking about."
"But I do." A smile forms on her lips as she raises Maya's left hand, examining the shiny silver ring. Maya's challenging smile drops as her eye's widen. Lucas's brows raise and Farkle walks closer to them.
"How did you-"
"I know sparkly things. It's kind of a sixth sense." Riley taps the side of her head, proudly keeping her head high. "I'm forgetting something..." She pretends to think. And then, as if a light bulb shines above her head, she stands up and screams happily. "Congratulations peaches!!!" She exclaims. Farkle and Lucas flinch at the same time as Maya stands up, hugging her best friend tightly.
"What she said, man." Farkle nods, shaking his hand.
"Oh bro, come here." Lucas gives him a hug. Ghetto white boys.
----
It's a Sunday afternoon and Maya is out trying on wedding dresses with her best friend Riley. She smiles happily and claps every time Maya walks out with a new satin white dress and lace veil. Honestly, Maya wants her opinion. But Riley says she loves them all. Way to help, Riles.
"What about this one?" Maya walks out, putting the white gloves on. Riley raises her brows and her jaw drops. She walks out and stands on the platform that is inside the dress shop. Smiling, she looks down at her not-to-long, not-to-short white silk dress. It's strapless, and has fluttery ends to it. Her veil goes down her back, both whites bringing out the blue in her eyes. And when she smiled, she felt radiant inside. This was definitely the dress.
~
Meanwhile Lucas is out with Zay, eating at a restaurant after buying his black tuxedo like easy. He picked up his chicken wrap and bit into it obnoxiously and manly. Zay on the other hand, made a grossed out expression.
"Dude, really?"
"Listen. I'm going to be a married man soon. And that means I'm going to be more mannered." He says. Zay opens his mouth, about to speak-but Lucas interrupted him. "And I don't expect you to understand, because y'a know, Vanessa..."
"VANESSA." Zay exclaims out loud, immediately smacking a hand over his mouth. "You know what? She broke up with me. I didn't know she'd be surprised when I pulled out the ring."
"Zay, it was your fifth date with her!"
He raises his brows defensively, crossing his arms. "I like to move fast."
A waitress walks over in her purple apron that wrapped around her slim waist. She has light brown hair and light blue eyes, and the whitest teeth around.
"You guys all done?" She asks, tucking a strand of straight hair behind her ear. Zay's eyes widen.
"Kelsey?"
Lucas glances at him, raising his brows. Zay stares back, dumbfounded. "Kelsey? From Texas? From our old school?"
She smiles, rubbing Zay's head. "I moved to New York last year." Kelsey giggles, her eyes traveling from Zay to Lucas. "Hey, Lucas."
Lucas suddenly remembers who she is and freezes, trying to let words fall out. They were glued to the roof of his mouth. Kelsey makes an estranged face. "I guess I'll come back in five minutes. Let me know when you need the check." She says, turning as her brown hair flipped over her shoulder like natural as professional.
"Dude... You remember her, right?" Zay looks back at him, setting his hands on his cheeks.
"That's her now?" Lucas finally says, feeling like his mouth was formerly glued from the inside. "Wow."
Zay gives him a look. "Lucas, she was just your childhood friend. Yeah, you guys could've had like, something, but now you have someone who you love."
"I wonder how different thugs would've been if..."
He gives him a harder look. "You don't need to wonder that. Hello? Maya Hart? The girl you would practically move the planet for?"
"Of course." He nods his head. "But catching up with an old friend wouldn't be so bad, would it?" Lucas asks him, his eyes lingering on his old friend. Zay presses his lips in a firm line, but sighs.
"I guess it wouldn't be so bad. But remember who's watching you." He remarks, pointing two fingers at his own eyes to Lucas's.
~
"I'm definitely getting this." Maya looks down at her white dress, caressing it's light satin feel. "I actually feel like a princess."
"Maya Hart? Feeling like a princess? That must've been the most innocent thing you've ever said." Riley remains sitting in the chair, her legs crossed.
She smiles, and checks the price tag. Her heart drops.
"I feel like I'm gonna faint." Maya says, peeling her eyes off the price. Riley stands up and looks at it. Her eyes widen and she actually faints.
~
"It's pretty cool to see you after all these years." Kelsey smiles, her hair gently flying up from the wind. "I kinda wanted to see what was so special about New York. And now I see it." She looks up at the tall buildings from afar.
"Yeah. I learned a lot from being here. Met great people; everything's pretty much a life lesson here."
Kelsey smiles. "You haven't changed a bit. Okay maybe a little. You're not so 'Mr. Macho man.' anymore."
"Okay I still am." Lucas defends himself.
"Yeah?" Kelsey laughs as he nods his head assuringly.
"Yeah. One time, I skipped class. And another time, I accidentally tripped someone, and didn't apologize." He says, trying to sound badass. Kelsey held back a laugh, pressing her lips tightly together. They both end up laughing and holding their to stomachs as they talk some more. Lucas looks at her hesitantly as he notices the crinkle near her eyes when she smiles, and the faint dimples that seem to flash on her cheeks.
What was he getting himself into?
Later on, she gets ready to go home as they stand up from the bench they were sitting on.
"So. Have you met anyone special since you came here?"
As Lucas is about to open his mouth, she continues on. "You know, before you moved away, I was about to tell you that I liked you." She looks down, exhaling. "It sucks I never got to. But regardless of that, you were leaving."
Lucas gulps down the unknowing lump in his throat. "But, now that I'm here," she scoots herself closer to him with a smile. Lucas looks at her and coughs awkwardly.
"Kelsey, I'm engaged now." Lucas blurts, scratching the back of his neck. Kelsey's blue eyes widen for a second, but her glance looks to the floor. "I know what I could be missing. But that applies to all the decisions I make."
She nods, scooting away slightly. "I'm happy for you, Friar. So, who is she?"
As Lucas is about to introduce is fiancé, they are both interrupted by hollering down a street.
"I KNOW THAT WE ARE SUPPOSED TO PAY THE LAST HUNDRED DOLLARS BUT I'M BUYING THE CAKE WITH THAT MONEY" Riley screams at the running police coming from behind them. They look at Riley and then to Maya, who is wearing a long white dress and running fast as hell. Her veil is flying back on her head, her blonde hair flying absolutely everywhere. Her hands remain holding up her dress. Riley quickly hails a taxi and they jump into the car, the taxi immediately taking off, hearing screams and hands waving out the window.
Kelsey turns back to him, her brow raised up high and her eyes widening.
Lucas smiles as the taxi makes a turn down the street. "Wow... I guess you are up for the challenge of adventure." She says, a laugh coming up her throat.
He glances back at her and nods. "She's everything to me." Kelsey presses her lips together, but she exhales.
"I'm happy for you, Friar. Texas will miss you. And me, for that matter." She shrugs, crossing her arms. Her lips form a smile and looks at the boy. "Take care of yourself." Kelsey adds, adjusting her brown hat before walking down the sidewalk, giving him one last smile.
Lucas lets go of a breath he was holding and shakes his head. "Well, that's a relief. Time to catch a damsel in distress."
